(1) Geoinformatics
Geoinformatics efforts are concentrated along developing domain ontologies, databases, and markup languages for fault rocks and structural geology-tectonics, applying UML for design, XML Schema for markup langugage development, RDF, RDFS, and OWL for ontological engineering
.

SAFOD Draft Model v1.0

The ontological engineering part involves developing ontologies for: i) fault gouge, studying cores from the Earthscope's San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) project, ii) accretionary prisms and subduction zone.

Potential Thesis and Dissertation Topics for Graduate Students:

1. Mereotopology of spatio-temporal geological entities
2. Ontology of geological processes
3. Ontology of structural geology and rock deformation
4. Ontology of fault and fault rock
5. Designing top-level ontologies for Earth Sciences
6. Ontology of geological time

Projects:
1 - Microstructural analyses of gouge from the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) borehole in relation to brittle fault mechanics (supported by the National Science Foundation: 2006-2008)

2 - Development and Implementation of the cyberSTRUCTURE Information system (cSIS)

(2) Study of fracture system and ophiolites in the Zagros Fold-Thrust belt
This project involves studying fold- and fault-related fracture systems for kinematics purposes. The areas include Neyriz ophiolite, and Kazerun and Minab-Zendan fault zones.
