Overview
Georgia State Debate provides coaching and support for students who wish to compete in weekend tournaments against teams from outstanding schools such as Harvard, Michigan and Stanford. Georgia State enters regional and national events between September and April. Student pairs argue both sides of an annual public policy topic such as America’s foreign policy toward “rogue” nations, mass-media law or immigration reform. On-campus programs include public debates, workshops for area high school students and teachers, and Georgia State-run tournaments. The debate team also supports the Atlanta Urban Debate League, a program to promote debate in urban middle schools and high schools in Atlanta.
Debate offers great training in critical thinking, public speaking and research skills beyond the intellectual challenge of arguing against other bright students. Undergraduates
at all experience levels are welcome; active members include both those who debated in high school and many who started at Georgia State. Students can join at any time, though the earlier in the fall they join, the more tournament opportunities are available.
