Windows:
While our policy prohibits recommending a specific wireless
card for windows machines, we do offer guidelines to assist you
in choosing one, as well as a list of those proven compatible with
the University network. The card should be:
- 802.11b
certified,
- Wi-Fi
certified by the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance
(WECA), and
- upgradeable
via a firmware update to accommodate upcoming additions
and changes to wireless standards.
Although
any Wi-Fi certified 802.11b wireless card should work with the Georgia
State wireless network, the following cards have been tested, and
deemed compatible, with the University network: CISCO,
3Com, Linksys, Orinoco, Lucent,
Symbol PC, Netgear, d-Link.
Macintosh:
Macintosh
users should purchase and install the Apple Airport
card. The
Airport card is 802.11b compliant and should recognize most access
points which adhere to the 802.11b standard.
The Airport Card and Airport Extreme Card are both compatible with
Georgia State's wireless network, and most Macintosh computers made
in the past two to three years include a slot for the Airport Card.
The card costs approximately $80.00.
