Protecting Your University Computer During The Holiday Season:

As you prepare for the upcoming Christmas holiday break, take the following precautions to protect your University systems:

  1. Ensure that your Norton antivirus software is installed, working properly and that “real-time” protection is enabled. Right-click on the gold shield that is located on your taskbar and make sure there is a check next to Enable File System Realtime Protection.
  2. You may begin to receive emails that appear to contain holiday messages of cheer or ads from merchants that in fact contain viruses or malicious programs that can harm your computer. Never click on web links or open attachments contained in these messages—err on the side of caution and delete them unless you are certain that you can trust the source of the message.
  3. Before you leave the office to enjoy your holiday break shut down your computers. This will prevent would-be intruders from running automated scans and programs designed to figure out your passwords or break into your computer.
