Bill
Paraska is the Director of University Computing and Communications Services
for Georgia State University. Bill joined Georgia State in 1999 with the
initial charge to develop and implement a roadmap for upgrade of the University’s
data, voice and video networks.
Bill
served a pivotal role in the rapid completion of the campus network upgrade
to gigabit Ethernet switching. He designed and negotiated for the replacement
of the campus backbone with a full ring of 432 strands of dark fiber;
thus establishing a robust environment for moving to IP voice and video
service provisioning. Bill also developed the vision and funding justification
for evolving the former computer operations center into a state-of-the-art
“Network Operations Center” configured with overhead wire
management and full remote console control of all supported systems.
In
2000, Bill championed the creation of Information Security Planning at
Georgia State that led to the hiring of the first University Information
Security Officer and the adoption of an Information Security Master Plan.
He provides the vision for the continuing development of the Information
Security Program at Georgia State and authors many of the policies that
govern information security at Georgia State today.
Bill
brings to Georgia State deep and wide-ranging experience with data, voice,
security, and satellite systems from industry and the armed services.
Prior to joining Georgia State, he served as technical director at two
Atlanta-based software companies where he was responsible for customer-site
hardware sizing, software performance tuning, and competitive benchmark
testing. Bill is a retired Air Force colonel whose 27 years of service
included command roles in computing and communications groups.
