February 6, 2008 Contact: New program gives students and alumni opportunity to “Thank a Teacher”ATLANTA – Peter Lindsay remembers well his college professor who taught him political theory. Lindsay, a professor of political science and director of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at Georgia State, has gone on to lofty heights as an educator; in 2006, he was awarded the University System of Georgia Board of Regents’ Teaching Excellence Award. “I can’t get in touch with him,” Lindsay says of his old professor. “I’d like to thank him.” So Lindsay has done the next best thing: He’s created a way for Georgia State students and alumni to say thanks to one of their former professors. Called “Thank a Teacher,” the program is simply an e-mail interface hosted on the CTL Web site where a current or former student can reach out and formally recognize a professor, instructor, teaching assistant or staff member who made their experience at Georgia State a positive one. “Usually when we hear from students it’s when we screw up,” Lindsay said. “So it means a lot to a faculty member when they hear that they had a positive influence in someone’s life, which is the ultimate goal.” When a “Thank a Teacher” e-mail is sent to the CTL, it is screened and recorded, and then channeled to the appropriate department for the faculty or staff member, Lindsay said. “It seems that people keep up with their high school teachers, but not their college professors,” he said. “The idea is to create some outreach for students and the faculty here.” To thank a teacher, visit www2.gsu.edu/~wwwctl/nominate.html.
