March 7, 2008 Contact: Community Forum 2008 to promote healing and justiceATLANTA – With hundreds of social organizations serving metro Atlanta, the Georgia State University School of Social Work will bring many of them together March 12 to form new partnerships for more efficient service to the community. The daylong Community Forum 2008 will feature seminars, speakers and workshops designed to foster new relationships among the various entities that operate in mostly low-income areas. Director Nancy Kropf said the forum is an ideal way for the School of Social Work to take its mission of health, social and economic justice to the public. “We’re focusing this day on bringing people together to look at ways to invest in our communities,” Kropf said. “We’re looking at ways to promote healing and restorative justice.” Some of the issues to be addressed include gentrification, economic disparities among communities and community health care. Four workshops will be held in the morning and again in the afternoon, so that participants can do multiple workshops. Beyond learning specific skills and tools, Kropf said the goal is to have the different community leaders and organizations working together so that they’ll get to know each other better and discuss particular issues they face, possible partnerships and innovations. “We hope by coming together, people will broaden their networks,” Kropf said. “That’s why we wanted the forum to be interactive.” The keynote speaker will be King Davis, executive director of the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health Services, Research, Policy and Education at the University of Texas at Austin. Formerly the commissioner of the Virginia Department of Mental Health, Davis has a lengthy career advocating for those with mental health needs. The forum will be in the State Ballroom of the Student Center. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the forum concludes at 4 p.m. What: Community Forum 2008 Who: Keynote speaker King Davis When: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., March 12 Where: Student Center, State Ballroom Information: Visit http://chhs.gsu.edu/socialwork/communityforum.asp
