August 6, 2008 Contact: Rialto announces 2008-09 series
Incorporating everything from flamenco dance to well-known musicians to a high-voltage percussion group, the 18-show series features performers never before seen in Atlanta, in addition to a handful of returning favorites. “We’re doing things that people aren’t going to see anywhere else,” says Rialto director Leslie Gordon, citing some of the highlights of this year’s series. “The season is an exciting mix of various types of performance.” Double bass master Edgar Meyer will team up with Chris Thile, the mandolin player best known for his work with Nickel Creek, for a performance that showcases their unique brand of progressive bluegrass. Dance enthusiasts will enjoy “Flamenclorico,” which kicks off the series on Oct. 4, the Paul Taylor Dance Company and hip-hop dance with Rennie Harris Puremovement. Jazz lovers can look forward to shows by jazz piano legend Ramsey Lewis and the Mingus Big Band, as well as Latin jazz with the Conga Kings, who close out the series on May 9. “We value our reputation as the university arts center that brings once-in-a-lifetime cultural experiences to the Southeast while challenging patrons to expand their artistic worldviews,” Gordon says. “In the upcoming season, we’ll continue to be the place where Atlanta and the world get a little better acquainted.” Series subscriptions are on sale now, and single tickets will go on sale Sept. 3. ATLANTA — Georgia State’s Rialto Center for the Arts is bringing a diverse lineup of performers to the stage for its 2008-09 series.
