September 18, 2008 Contact: Georgia State University hosts Family WeekendATLANTA – Catch some Panther spirit and learn more about your student’s life at Georgia State University by attending the fourth annual Family Weekend on Sept. 27 – 28. From the barbecue cookout to day trips in the city, the weekend offers ample opportunities for families to reconnect with their students and get to know more about Georgia State. “We have an exciting weekend planned for you as you spend time with your student on our beautiful urban campus in historic downtown Atlanta,” said Matthew Robison, Georgia State’s director of new student programs and parent relations. Close to 200 family members are expected for this year’s event, Robison said. The weekend will kick off at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27 with the “Blue & White Breakfast” and a welcome from Georgia State President Carl Patton. Families can then choose to attend an information session on the future of Georgia State with Vice President for Student Affairs Douglass Covey or a question and answer discussion with a panel of Georgia State parents. After the sessions, families will get a taste for daily learning at Georgia State by attending a lecture given by a distinguished faculty member in either communications or economics. At noon a barbecue cookout, sponsored by the Parents Association, will be held on Urban Life Plaza, complete with games, prizes and music. The Georgia State cheerleaders and the mascot, Pounce, will make an appearance to get the party started. Following lunch, families can attend a session on Georgia State athletics or a discussion on how to stay healthy and happy in college, before heading off on day trips to the Georgia Aquarium or the Fernbank Museum of Natural History. Families also can choose to stay on campus and explore the Rialto Center for the Arts, the Student Recreation Center, the Ernest G. Welch School of Design and Art Gallery or downtown Atlanta for free. The evening will end in the Student Center Lobby with an ice cream social. At 1 p.m. the following day, Sunday, Sept. 28, families are invited to cheer the Panthers to victory at the Family Weekend women’s soccer game against the Tribe of William and Mary. Admission to the Panthersville Sports Complex is free and all individuals registered with Family Weekend will receive a free hotdog and soft drink. “Family Weekend is a chance to support your own student, meet other parents and Georgia State representatives, and enjoy yourself,” said Donna Buckner, president of the Georgia State Parents Association. The cost to attend Family Weekend is $30 per adult and $15 per student. Members of the Georgia State Parents Association receive a discounted adult price of $20. Day trips are additional fees. The Georgia Aquarium is $22 and the Fernbank Museum costs $13.
