University Relations Tip Sheet - March 20, 2003

Business and Law

BUSINESS: Risk management is serious business
In the atmosphere of increased liability that is the legacy of Enron and other fallen corporate giants, many business leaders are realizing they must better understand and manage not just their accounting and auditing practices, but the entire range of risks that could affect their bottom line. An increasing number of companies are making risk management an organization-wide endeavor. Georgia State University experts available for commentary on this type of approach (called enterprise risk management) include Richard Phillips, an associate professor of risk management and insurance, and Martin Leinweber, director of the Center for Enterprise Risk Management and Assurance Services. Contact Phillips at 404-651-3397 or rphillips@gsu.edu ; Leinweber at 404-651-2738 or mleinweber@gsu.edu.

BUSINESS: Making the most of online marketing
Web-based commercial transactions are expected to grow more than 2000 percent in the next five years, and businesses with well-designed Web sites could reap the greatest sales rewards. Georgia State University marketing professor Naveen Donthu is at the forefront of Web-interface technology and can discuss the Web site presentations that are proving the most effective. Contact Donthu at 404-651-1043 or ndonthu@gsu.edu.

BUSINESS: Keeping an eye on the economy's future
Corporate meltdowns and the war against terrorism have been major contributors to the economic uncertainty plaguing the United States. Rajeev Dhawan, director of Georgia State University's Economic Forecasting Center, anticipates and accounts for the various factors that could affect the future health of the national economy. Contact Dhawan at 404-651-3291 or rdhawan@gsu.edu . Hear audio of Dhawan discussing the Economic Forecasting Center's most recent predictions at http://www.gsu.edu/~wwwrad.

BUSINESS/LAW: What sort of tort reform is needed?
The battle for tort reform has been raging for years, with businesses, insurance companies and doctors leading the charge for change. Insurance companies routinely blame big jury awards for the high insurance rates hurting businesses and doctors. Perry Binder, an assistant professor of legal studies in the Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University, weighs in on various popular tort-reform proposals, including caps on non-economic damages and holding multiple defendants responsible only for the percentage each is found liable. Contact Binder at 404-463-9898 or pbinder@gsu.edu.

LAW: Big Brother is watching
The war on terrorism has led U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft to authorize more wiretaps and searches than any other Justice Department administration since the creation of the Federal Intelligence Surveillance Act in 1978. Georgia State University law professor Ellen Podgor, an expert on international criminal law, can discuss the civil-rights ramifications of this increased vigilance. Contact Podgor at 404-651-2087 or epodgor@gsu.edu.

LAW: Bar not up to par
The bar exam is not an adequate measure of whether someone is competent enough to practice law, according to Andi Curcio, an associate professor of law at Georgia State University. Curcio, who has researched the bar exam for the past two years, found that the test is "both under-inclusive and over-inclusive," favoring higher socioeconomic groups (which typically perform well on multiple-choice tests) but overlooking oral communication and a range of other skills necessary to succeed in the law profession. Contact Curcio at 404-651-4157 or acurcio@gsu.edu.
