Department of Modern and Classical Languages

Georgia State Entry Portal for the WebCAPE Placement Exam

What is WebCAPE?

WebCAPE is a web-based implementation of the BYU Foreign Language Computer-Adaptive Placement Exam (CAPE) series. Exams are available in French, German and Spanish. This exam is used to help students determine the level of language course most appropriate for their current ability in the language.

Students who do not have credit for French/German/Spanish 1001 must take this test in order to satisfy the prerequisite before registering for the 1002 - level. This prerequisite will be enforced.

Minimum required scores to register for:

Fren/Grmn/Span 1002 = 200

Fren/Grmn/Span 2001 = 300

If you score 300+, you should consider taking the CLEP exam for credit for level 2001-2002. You will be contacted via email for placement advisement If you score 400+ on the French or German Web Cape Exams. The next step for students who score 400 and above on the Spanish Web Cape Exam will be required to take the Intermediate-Advanced Spanish Exam (IASE) on U-Learn. Please contact Dr. Oscar Moreno at omoreno@gsu.edu to have the IASE added to your U-Learn account. Be sure to provide him with your GSU Panther ID number and your campus ID (which is the first part of your GSU email address, the part before @student.gsu.edu).

The Web Cape Exam is available for new or continuing Georgia State students. This exam is to be used for placement purposes only. No credit for languages courses will be granted based on the results of this test. Students may take the exam from any computer with internet access and a browser. Each test takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.

When the test is completed, you will be given your score and a recommendation for a class level. You will also receive an email with your score. You should print a copy of your results to keep for your files and for academic advisement purposes.

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages will also receive a copy of your score. The Department will remove the prerequisite hold from your record and you will be able to register for the course as determined by the score you obtained on the Web Cape Exam. YOU DO NOT NEED TO CONTACT THE DEPARTMENT. Please allow 1 business day for the prerequisite hold to be removed. If your score is 400 or above on the Spanish Web Cape Exam, you will have to take the IASE (see above).
