Degrees offered: Master of Arts
The Department of Modern and Classical Languages offers the Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in French, German, and Spanish.
The Master of Arts degree with concentration in literature, emphasizes advanced study in language, culture, and literature.
The concentration in Applied Linguistics and Pedagogy, offered in all three languages, also includes courses of particular interest to foreign language teachers.
In addition to the general requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Modern and Classical Languages has the following requirements:
- An undergraduate major or its equivalent in the language to be studied
- A minimum of three literature courses, including the introductory course or its equivalent
- A complete dossier which must include:
- a letter of intent expressing the objectives of the student in entering the program
- two letters of recommendation speaking to the applicant's potential for successful completion of a graduate program (dossiers will not be considered without both letters)
- a writing sample of an analytical nature in the target language
- completion of an interview with the Director of Graduate Studies or a member of the graduate faculty
At the discretion of the Graduate Committee, an entrance exam may be required.
