Pre Fall 2000 Degree Requirements


New degree requirements are in effect for students entering the program in the fall of 2000 or thereafter. Students who entered the program before the fall of 2000 may choose to meet either the old requirements or the new requirements. However, they may not mix the two. In other words, they may not meet some of the new requirements and some of the old requirements.

Note that only six hours of credit transferred from another institution may be applied towards the GSU M.A.

Traditional Track

  1. Twenty-four hours of graduate coursework in philosophy, including
    1. History Requirement--at least one of the following courses:
      • Phil 6010, Plato
      • Phil 6020, Aristotle
      • Phil 6040, Augustine and Aquinas (Formerly Phil 6120.)
      • Phil 6050, Special Topics in Modern Philosophy (Formerly Phil 6150.)
      • Phil 6060, Kant (Formerly Phil 6160.)
      • Phil 6200, Religion in America
    2. Ethics Requirement--at least one of the following courses:
      • Phil 6650, Religion and Ethics
      • Phil 6700, Ethics
    3. Metaphysics and Epistemology Requirement--at least one of the following courses:
      • Phil 6090, Spacial Topics in Continental Philosophy (Formerly Phil 6190.)
      • Phil 6220, Theories of Religion
      • Phil 6100, Epistemology (Formerly Phil 6420.)
      • Phil 6300, Metaphysics (Formerly Phil 6600.)
      • Phil 6520, Philosophy of Language (Formerly Phil 6400.)
  2. Seminar Requirement--at least two seminar courses.
  • Six hours of Phil 8999 (To register for this course you need to use this form.), Thesis Research*
  • A written general examination in the history of philosophy.
  • A thesis.
  • A thesis defense.
  • Applied Track

    1. Eighteen hours of graduate coursework in philosophy, including
      1. Phil 8800, Logic in Communication
      2. At least two courses in applied philosophy
      3. An internship, Phil 8900, is encouraged but not required.
    2. Nine hours of graduate coursework outside of philosophy, the nine hours to be taken in courses approved by the department.
    3. Six hours of Phil 8999 (To register for this course you need to use this form.), Thesis Research.*
    4. A written general examination specific to the student's coursework.
    5. A thesis.
    6. A thesis defense.

    *The written general examination requirement must be satisfied prior to enrolling in thesis research.
