Advantages of the Project

1)

Preparation for IP Telephony, including a phone system maintained by GSU. This change will increase the speed that service requests and troubles can be handled.

2)

Every user will have a 100MB connection to the desktop. Currently most areas still have a 10MB to the desktop.

3)

The system will provide the ability for a user to have a 1GB connection to the desktop based on need.

4)

All campus buildings will have a redundant 1 Gig connection with the Urban Life Building, Kell Hall and the Natural Science Center having a redundant 10 Gig connection to support connection to SLR.

5)

Ability to authenticate at the port level on the network, increasing the security level of the campus network.

6)

The ability to control the bandwidth across the network to give priority to voice, video and data (Quality of Service). This will make sure that voice connections with the IP Telephony system are available and that the streaming video will be smooth.

Project Update - October 2006

10/13 - The Network Upgrade team is wrapping up the migration of host servers in the NOC from the Cisco environment to the Extreme infrastructure. The project is still on track to be complete during the October 31, 2006 timeframe.

Project Update - September 2006

  • Septemer 8, 2006 marked the end of the GSU building upgrade schedule. All campus buildings have been upgraded with Extreme switches. Again, this is a significant milestone for the project team. We express our sincere gratitude to those that volunteered during this effort and contributed to our success.

  • We are continuing the migration of host servers in the NOC to the Extreme infrastructure. Currently this project has a tentative completion date of October 31, 2006.

Project Update - July 2006

  • June 2006 marked the beginning of deployments for the network upgrade. To date, seven buildings have been converted to the new campus network infrastructure. Based on the project plan, we will begin application cut-overs during the mid-July timeframe. We ask that you continue to monitor this project webpage for updates regarding our progress.

NOTE: Post deployment, the standard that will be followed when connecting devices to the Campus Network via the Layer 2 Switches will be to Auto Negotiate at the switch Ports and the User Devices. Any exception to this rule must be discussed with IS&T UCCS for justification. Acceptable solutions must be determined jointly and properly documented to maintain a securely managed campus network.

Project Update - April 2006

  • The Network Upgrade team reached a significant milestone at the end of March 2006 by officially completing all tasks associated with Phase II of the Network Upgrade project. Phase II encompassed configuration, staging, and testing of the network design. As we move into Phase III for deployment, this project webpage will be actively updated to keep the user community abreast of up-coming deployments. Planning sessions to determine building and system deployment dates are in progress. New information will be provided as it becomes available. The user community is encouraged to check this site regularly as date changes may be necessary as nuances are identified.
