Internships

The Department of Political Science offers its majors an opportunity to obtain credit and experience through internships. Some require full-time work while others are part-time. All internships are competitive. Students must meet certain qualifications prior to internship enrollment authorization. Interested students should come to the political science department for additional information (1005 GCB). Generally, political science majors must meet the following qualifications (there may be exceptions):

  • 2.5 GPA
  • 15 hours of political science
  • 3. Exceptions for legislative internships
  • Enrollment in PolS 4930, 4940 or 8995 for credit
  • At least 45 hours of coursework, at least 30 hours completed at GSU.
  • Internships must be a new experience or continuation of an ongoing internship over two (2) semesters, not a current position.
  • No credit for internships will be allowed retroactively..
  • Interview and assessment
  • Acceptance by internship provider

REQUIREMENTS FOR CREDIT:

  1. Enrolled.
  2. Completion of 225 hours work for 3 hours credit.
  3. Completion of 450 hours work for 6 hours credit.
  4. Keep a journal.
  5. Complete a paper.
  6. Supplemental reading as suggested by academic director of internship
  7. All internship credit hours earned are applied as elective credit.
  8. No internship may be applied to the 27 credit hours requirement for the major or minor in political science.
  9. Internship must be done under the direction of a faculty member.

In addition to political science internships, there is also the Georgia Legislative Internship under the direction of Dr. Richard Engstrom. These internships are open to all junior and senior college students of all majors. Selected interns work full time for a committee of the Georgia General Assembly when it is in session during the Spring semester. Interested students should complete an application and return it at the Political Science Department.  Students interested in Law interships should contact Dr. Howard, Dr. Graves, or Dr. Steigerwalt.

Availability of internships varies but some examples of the types of internships are electoral (political campaigning, polling, etc.), legislative (working for Senate or House committees, lobbying, working for a legislator), executive (Governor's program, various agencies), international (Carter Center, other international organizations) and miscellaneous governmental agencies.
