Student Organizations
Political science students have several opportunities to participate in student organizations through the department. Pi Sigma Alpha is the national honorary organization for political science students. In 1997, our chapter was recognized as the best for universities of 15,000 students and greater. On April 23rd, 2008 the Political Science Department inducted 9 new members into the Nu Phi Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha. The inductees received a custom Pi Sigma Alpha Tassel, Pin, and Certificate. It was a very special occassion for students, faculty, and staff. The Nu Phi chapter was established in 1983 and is the officially recognized chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha at Georgia State University. Its objectives are to promote a greater understanding of issues relevant to political science, to encourage scholarship, to recognize students who have achieved acadmic excellence in the discipline, and to provide services to its members and students in general with regard to academic, professional, and scholarly pursuits relating political science.
Since many of our majors are interested in law school, the Department also sponsors the Pre-law Club. An international affairs honor society, Sigma Iota Rho, has recently been established within the department. This is an interdisciplinary honor society designed to promote scholarship in the interdisciplinary field of international affairs.
The new Freshman-Sophomore Honor Society inducted its members in Spring of 2007. In January 2008, they held their first Debate discussing many of the prevalent issues in the upcoming Presidential elections. On April 24th, 2008, new members were inducted into the Honor Society, recognized for their outstanding achievement.
Participation in these clubs can greatly enrich one's educational experience through interaction with like-minded students and through the attainment of common goals. The Department encourages students to form other clubs.
