My interests focus on the role of contextual resilience factors in the development of children and adolescents. We are researching an array of factors--including neighborhood violence, parent involvement, and peer groups--and how they interact in relation to children's academic and behavioral adjustment and well-being. I am particularly interested in development over key educational transitions, such as preschool and middle school, and in at risk populations, such as children in poverty and/or with developmental disabilities.

Currently, my two main funded projects include: (1) an evaluation of after-school programs in Kansas City funded by the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program, and (2) research in Israel on processes of risk and protection among a sample of youth from several communities in the Negev. I am also involved with colleagues at the GSU Center for Research on School Safety in several collaborative studies in metro-Atlanta.

In addition to my empirical work, I write about the implications of developmental science for social policy. My policy work currently focuses on parent involvement in early education.

I have faculty affiliations with the Center for Research on Atypical Development and Learning, the Center for Research on School Safety, the Institute of Public Health and the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, all at GSU, and with the Yale Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy.
