1. How long is the GSTEP?

Approximately 2 ½ hours

2. What's on the GSTEP?

The GSTEP has

  • a listening comprehension section

  • a short writing section(essay)

  • a mulitple choice grammar and

  • a reading comprehension section.

3. How long does it take to get the score?

One week

4. Can I take the test again? Can I take the GSTEP more than one time?

Students may take the test once per semester.

5. How does my school get my score? How does the school that I've applied to get my score?

There is a place on the application to write the school you are applying to. The ESL Testing Program sends a copy of your score to that school.

6. Is there a study book?

There is an informational handout that describes the test and gives sample questions.

7. Can I register for a friend?

No, you cannot register for a friend. All students must register in person in the Department of Applied Linguistics and ESL on the 10th floor of the Urban Life Building at Georgia State University.

8. Can I pay with cash? A personal check? A money order?

  • You cannot pay with cash. Office staff are not allowed to collect cash.

  • You can pay with a personal check with proper identification.

  • You can pay with a money order. You can buy a money order at the U.S. Post Office on the GSU campus during their regular working hours.

9. I can't take the GSTEP on the date that I had registered for.  How can I change my registration date?

    Rescheduling is not permitted.  Test fees are nonrefundable.

10. What are the dates for the GSTEP this semester? Next semester?

Dates are established at the beginning of each semester. You can find that information by going to the ESL Testing Dates information section.
