Web site
(unit, college, www.gsu.edu, personal) (WebCT course)
1 Request web space for a site

Unit or college

Contact the appropriate site administrator (ask for the webmaster)

Individual Panther account

Get a Panther account (Unix). Login to your Panther account at telnet://panther.gsu.edu and enter "webspace" to initialize the Web space directory public_html.

Individual Panther Web spaces are appropriate for vitae and other Web pages closely related only to an individual's work at Georgia State. For projects with multiple contributors, e.g., a Web site for a multi-section course, it is helpful to have a site specifically for that purpose. This arrangement facilitates collaborating on the site and reassigning responsibilities when needed.

Project account on www.gsu.edu

To request a project web site on panther.gsu.edu, send a request with the following information in an email to help@gsu.edu or call the Help Center. Requests for project accounts require Panther account IDs.

  1. Owner: Name and title of owner-to-be of the site
  2. Novell ID: xxxxxx
  3. Email address: Email address of site owner
  4. Phone: Phone number of site owner
  5. Unit: Academic unit name
  6. College: College name
  7. Other editors: Name, Novell ID, email address, phone number, academic unit, and college of other site editors. If none, indicate "none".
  8. Purpose: Course web site
  9. Course: Course prefix, number, and title
  10. Web site name: A 6-character name of the form "wwwxxx" where "xxx" makes the name unique at www.gsu.edu/~wwwxxx.
  11. Alias: A 6-character alias for "wwwxxx". Check www.gsu.edu/yyyyyy to ensure uniqueness.

Personal

Contact a provider, e.g., an ISP or telephone or cable company.
2 Install a file transfer protocol (FTP) program to "FTP" files to the site Any FTP program will do, e.g., RapidFiler, WS_FTP, FTP embedded in an HTML editor. Download WS_FTP from GSU's download page. There is no charge for WS_FTP, and it can be downloaded to off-campus machines. HTML editors, e.g., Dreamweaver, FrontPage, and GoLive, usually include FTP capabilities.
3 Reset the password from the initial one Login to Panther with the site name, e.g., wwwxxx, and initial password and change the password. Panther lives at telnet://panther.gsu.edu.
4 Define the site to the FTP program For example, in WS_FTP, define the profile as follows:
Session properties: General tab
  Host name/address panther.gsu.edu
  Host type Automatic detect
User ID [name of site, e.g., wwwxxx]
  Password [the current one]
Startup tab
  Initial remote site folder

public_html

[Once on the site, you may make directories, which you can subsequently add to the path, e.g., public_html/pro/acct8630. The slashes in this path are forward ones.]

  Initial local folder

[path to your hard disk directory for the site, e.g., d:\... The slashes in this path are backward ones.]

Other FTP programs will require the same information although their labels for it may differ.
5 FTP files to/from a site Move to the appropriate folders (local and remote) and double-click or select the arrow to copy a file.
6 Protect a segment of a site, e.g., a folder named "pro" and all the files and subdirectories it contains

Create the subdirectory on the site, e.g., "pro", that is to be protected. For www.gsu.edu sites, login with your Panther ID at telnet://panther.gsu.edu. If the site is not your personal site, "sudo wwwxxx" to the site, where "wwwxxx" is the name of the site. The password expected at the password prompt is the one for your personal Panther account. Enter "nsconfig" and respond "2" to the prompt. At the prompt for the files to be protected, enter "pro/*.*". Respond to the name and password prompts. Enter "exit" to close the session (twice if you sudoed to another site.)

Using nsconfig for setting passwords on Web pages.

6 Reset site password

After it has expired

Every 90 days, FTP passwords on www.gsu.edu sites expire. To reset the FTP password after it expires, login to Panther at telnet://panther.gsu.edu with the site name, e.g., wwwxxx, and follow the prompts to enter a new password.

Before it expires

To reset the FTP password before it expires, login to Panther at telnet://panther.gsu.edu with your individual Panther name, "sudo" to the site (if a site different from your individual Panther account), enter "passwd", and follow the prompts to enter a new password.
7 Check space usage After logging into the site at telnet://panther.gsu.edu (and sudoing to a project site, if needed), enter "quota -v". Project accounts on www.gsu.edu default to 10 megabytes. Look at the line beginning "/web..." to compare current usage with the quota permitted. If you need more space, request it in an email to help@gsu.edu. Expect to provide substantial justification for sites to exceed 20 megabytes.
