Virtual Roman House

Since Adobe Atmosphere was discontinued long ago, the Virtual Roman House has been re-created using a new Web3D product called Blink 3D. Blink has many advantages over Atmosphere, and the Blink version of the Roman house is much better than the one made with Atmosphere, but Blink only runs on the PC platform, and requires a state-of-the-art machine with all the latest drivers installed. If you think your machine might meet the requirements of the Blink viewer, you can try opening the new Virtual Roman House by clicking on the image below:

If you are using a Mac, or if your PC is not up to the standards required by Blink, you can still try to view the old Atmosphere version at the bottom of this page, or you can get an impression of what the Blink version looks like by watching this YouTube video:

For more on Blink 3D, see the Pelican Crossing home page or go to Blink3Dworld.com

The Atmosphere world below represents a Roman house of a type known as a domus or atrium house. Though this particular house is an imaginary one, it incorportates elements drawn from various actual Roman houses (for example, the atrium wall decoration imitates that of the House of Sallust in Pompeii).

To enter the 3D environment, click inside the image at the right. Once inside, you can move around within the space using the arrow keys or the mouse. You can adjust your viewpoint by using the arrow keys or mouse while holding down the control key.

For a good on-line introduction to the Roman house, see Barbara McManus' Roman house pages. For a more extensive scholarly treatment of the topic, see The Houses of Roman Italy, 100 B.C.-A.D. 250: Ritual, Space, and Decoration by John R. Clarke (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1991).

The required browser plug-in should load automatically, provided you are viewing this page using Internet Explorer on a computer running Windows XP. Please be patient. For more information on the software used to create and view this 3D environment, see the Adobe Atmosphere Home Page

You can also see a full-screen version.
