Construction of Top Bars

The key to keeping honeybees in tbh's is the top bar itself. The width of the top bar determines the center-to-center spacing of the combs which the bees build.

photo shows the dimensions and shapes of top bars

The lettered dimensions in the above drawing are as follows: A is 46.5cm + twice the thickness of the side planks; E is about 20mm; D is 35mm (+/- 1mm) for Italian honeybees or 32mm for African honeybees; F is about 10mm; G is about 5mm more than the thickness of a side plank.

The drawings of the top bars indicate the references to dimensions that are in the text, dimensions which I copied in the above paragraph. The hardboard strip which projects downward from the center of each tb can be replaced by a groove into which foundation can be waxed.
