Spring Semester 2000
Laboratory Guidelines

Laboratory Times:     Thursdays, 7:20-9:50 PM
Classroom:                 334 Natural Science Center

Laboratory Manual: The lab manual will be distributed in the lab. Students should read the lab procedures before coming to class!

A SUPPLY CARD #2 ($20) IS REQUIRED.  CARDS CAN BE PURCHASED AT THE GSU BOOKSTORE. STUDENTS MUST PRESENT THIS CARD TO THE LAB INSTRUCTORS BY THE BEGINNING OF THE JAN. 18 LAB PERIOD. STUDENTS NOT DOING SO WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO ATTEND THE LAB.

Grading: The laboratory will factor into the student's final grade in two ways:

Two Exams each worth 50 points given on Feb. 29 and April 25

In-class performance as assessed by attendance and maintenance of a lab notebook will contribute 100 points to the         total grade.

Attendance at laboratory sessions is required.  One excused absence is permitted if approved by the laboratory instructors.  Each unexcused absence or additional excused absence will result in the deduction of 10 points from the in class performance grade.

Laboratory Notebook:  Each laboratory will be written up in the following format:

I. Introduction- (one page maximum).  This section will present a concise background about the specific exercise/experiment.

II. Materials and Methods- The section will cover the methods used.  The lab manual description can be used in preparation of this section, but be sure to indicate any changes in procedure that are made.

III. Results- (one page maximum).  This section should contain only results, not interpretations of results (save interpretations for the Discussion section).

IV. Discussion- (one to two pages).  This section will consist of interpretations of your results.  Discuss the significance of the exercise/experiment performed.

Laboratory notebooks will be turned in for grading twice during the semester: Feb. 29 and April 25. Late submission of the lab notebook will result in a 10 point deduction from the laboratory grade.
