Examinations: will be one hour in length and will consist of 50% short answer, definition and true-false questions and 50% essay questions. To assist students in preparation for the exams, one week before each exam a set of study questions from the lecture material will be available on the instructor's home page. Some of these questions will appear on the exam. Each exam will cover material presented since the previous exam; none of the exams will be cumulative in nature.
Make-up exam policy: One make-up exam will be allowed if a valid excuse is presented before the scheduled exam time. The make-up exam will be given on Tuesday, Dec. 7, and will consist of material covered on both Exams I and II.
Term Papers: Students will prepare two term papers.
Term Paper I will be a review of a book on virology available in the popular press (either fiction or nonfiction). After obtaining the book, students will bring their copy to class on either Aug. 31 or Sept. 7 to obtain instructor approval. After reading the book, students will prepare a five page (double spaced, 12 point, 1" margins) review of the book. The review should include: the author's background and motivation for writing the book, a summary of the book's contents, a general critique of the book including interest angles and insights which the book offers. The review will be concluded by a recommendation (zero to five stars) and a paragraph summarizing the recommendation. Term Paper I is due on Tuesday, Oct. 5.
Term Paper II will be a review of two or more original research articles on a topic of virology of interest to the student. Students will research the recent original research literature to find two papers related to the same research topic (either from the same or different labs). These papers will be submitted to the instructor on Tuesday, Oct. 12 and will be returned with suggestions by Tuesday, Oct. 19. The paper will be a minimum of ten pages of text (double-spaced, 12 point, 1" margins). The paper will contain an introduction to the topic (supported by background literature independent of the research articles), a description of the experimental approach taken in each article and the findings made, and a summary discussion of the progress made and future directions needed to be taken. If appropriate, a critique of the experimentation may be done. Literature used in preparation of the paper will be included in a Bibliography with appropriate citation in the text. Term Paper II is due on Tuesday, Nov. 30.
Attendance policy: Attendance of the instructor's lectures is
not required. However, attendance of the guest lecturer's presentations
is
required. Each guest lecture absence will result in a 15 point deduction
from the final grade.
