BIOL4910 provides undergraduates with an opportunity to perform independent research in one of the research laboratories on campus.
General information: Students authorized to register for BIOL4910 receive 5 credit hours. Typically, students are expected to work in the lab about 10-15 hours/week. BIOL4910 can be taken for one or two semesters.
Grading: The course is graded on a S/U scale and this grade will be based on the major professor's evaluation of your progress and participation as well as the Department Chair's evaluation of your written lab report. Each student will write up their research in the standard lab report format (see specific instructions on cover sheet) to be turned into the major professor in addition to the Department Chair. This report is usually due the last day of scheduled classes.
Presentation: Undergraduates who have completed a project,
have a chance to present their work in poster form during the annual Poster
Day at GSU (Spring semester).

How to Find a Laboratory: There are a couple of approaches to finding a lab.
1. Talk to professors that you know from your courses and find out what their lab is studying and if they are currently accepting students.
2. Find out what all of the professors are
researching by reading their web pages (biology.gsu.edu) or getting information
from the Biology Main Office (402 Kell Hall).
Talk to the professors that you are interested in
working with to find out if they are currently accepting students.
Some professors take only students they know, only students who have performed well in their courses or only students that can stay in the lab for two semesters. Be sure to find out the details when you talk to a professor.
Be sure to plan ahead. There are many more students than there are labs on campus so be sure to talk to professors far in advance of when you want to do the research (at least one semester is good).
