The Office of African-American Student Services and Programs (OAASS&P) serves students, faculty, staff, and community members in areas such as academic advisement, campus involvement, academic support, job and graduate school referrals and recommendations, and graduate research. OAASS&P is a university-wide resource promoting diversity through quality academic services and programs related to the recruitment and retention of African Americans at Georgia State University. The mission of OAASS&P is to assist African American students in getting good grades, staying in school, and graduating. The office also collaborates with several departments, offices, student groups, and community organizations. Through quality in-house, university-wide, and community-supported programming, the office fosters academic skill development, cultural, ethnic, and racial awareness, nurtures organizational development; encourages degree completion; and participates in community service. OAASS&P houses and provides support to over twenty chartered student organizations. The office sponsors several academic, cultural, social, and international activities to ensure that African American students are excellent ambassadors of Georgia State University upon graduation.
OAASS&P contributes to the retention of all students through diverse programs and services. Those programs and services are enhanced by the Minority Advising Program (MAP) which encompasses academic support workshops, the Black Freshman Network, the Black Sophomore Society, Black Junior Achievers, Black Senior Scholars and Superstars, Brothers Keepers, Sisters Keepers, Model African Union, GRE Prep sessions and a Tutorial program. OAASS&P is instrumental in promoting an appreciation for multiculturalism and diversity throughout the university community and celebrating excellence through initiatives such as the Annual Tribute to Achievement Awards Ceremony, OAASS&P Hoops it up for the Hungry Annual Basketball Tournament, Project Link to Africa and Black History Month activities including the leadership of the University-wide Black History Month Committee. OAASS&P recently founded the African American Performing and Visual Arts Council, which promotes the arts and has presented original and popular play readings on-campus.
