Formatting a graph using Excel 2007


1. Highlight the values you want to graph
2. Click Insert, Scatter, and the icon of curved lines with markers
3. If the background is shaded
    a. Right click anywhere on the graph
    b. Click "Format Plot Area"
    c. Click "No fill"
4. Right click anywhere on the graph then click Select Data
    a. Click on Series1, then click Edit
    b. In the Series Name box type the correct name of the series
    c. Click the "OK" in the "Edit Series" box
    d. Repeat for all the other series
    e, Click the "OK" in the "Select Data Series" box
5. Right Click on one of the lines
    a. Click "Format Data Series"
    b. Click "Marker Fill" then "No Fill"
    c. Click "Line Color"  "Solid Line"  "Color" and the black box
    d. Click "Line Style"  "Dash Type" and pick a different type for each line on your graph.
    e. Click "Marker Line Color"   "Solid Line"  "Color" and the black box
    f. Repeat for all the other series
6. Drag the right hand side of the graph to the right to fill the box.
      (This takes a little trial and error.)
7. Drag the legend to an unoccupied part of the graph
8. Right clock on the legend
    a. Click "Legend Fill" "Solid Fill" and click the white box.
      This keeps the gridlines out of the legend
9. Left click anywhere on graph and click "Layout" at the top of the screen
    a. Click "Axis Titles"  
    b. "Primary Horizontal Axis Title"  "Title Below Axis"  
    c. You sometimes have to click on the title box that appears on the graph, sometimes not.
    d. Type the name of the horizontal axis and touch Enter
    e. Repeat for the vertical axis
10. Left click anywhere on graph, click the big "Office" button, and click "Print"

Note: the requirement for full screen portrait mode has been dropped since 2007 is not set up to do it.



Formatting a graph using Classic Excel


1. Highlight the values you want to graph
2. Click "Insert"   "Chart"   "XY Scatter",  the icon of curved lines with markers, and "Finish"
3. Click anywhere on the graph where there is no line or gridline and click "Clear"
4. Right click anywhere on the graph then click "Source Data"  "Series"
    a. Click on Series1; in the  Name box type the correct name of the series
    b. Repeat for all the other series
    e, Click the "OK" in the "Source Data" box
5. Right Click on one of the lines
    a. Click "Format Data Series"
    b. Under "Line" click "Custom."   Choose black as the color
        Click "Style" and pick a different dash type for each line on your graph.
    e. Under "Marker:" click "Custom."   Choose black as the foreground color
        Choose "No color" as the background color
    d. Repeat for all the other series
6. Drag the right hand side of the graph to the right to fill the box.
      (This takes a little trial and error.)
7. Drag the legend to an unoccupied part of the graph
8. Left click anywhere on graph and click "Chart"  "Chart Options" at the top of the screen
    a.  Type the names of the X axis and Y axis then click OK
9. Click on one of the y axis numbers and select font size 8 at the top of the screen
    a. Repeat for the x axis
10  Click "File"   "Print Preview"  "Setup"  "Portrait" and OK
    This is so easy in classic excel you might as well do it
        even though your classmates with excel 2007 aren't required to
11  Click "Print"
