Course strengths.

1.

Wonderful teacher, I liked the "clickers", I loved all of the extra credit opportunities

2.

good introduction to economics.

3.

Awesome lectures.

4.

Interesting material.

5.

Combination of online quizzes, lectures, and aplia homework assignments kept me on top of the course material. I was able to get a preview, learn, and reinforce each section.

6.

she offered a lot of bonus material, which is good because I came everyday to class took notes, did outside assignments, studied for tests and still didn't do well on the tests. they were very difficult.

7.

The lectures were very helpful, but the clicker questions made everything more clear and gives feedback on what needs to be looked at.

8.

Shelby made the class very interesting

9.

Not very hard, pay attention and you'll do fine.

10.

good sequence of topics

11.

graphs were helpful

12.

Grading System, using dollar values. Aplia, CPS Clickers

13.

The interactive questions really helped

14.

The Course gave a lot of opportunity for extra credit to build your grade up in the class.

dr. frost! shelby is probably the best teacher i have had at georgia state to date, seriously.

18.

very well taught

19.

The course was relevant to the outside world. Most of the concepts that were introduced in the course were directly relevant, and in action in the real world. It is amazing how clearly the course helped me understand the real world better, economically speaking.

20.

good textbook

21.

Everything was good, but the book was the best!!

Instructor strengths.

1.

confident, fun, knowledgable, helpful, available

2.

Makes the subject very intresting even for people who dont necessarily care for eocnomics.

3.

Good teacher, brilliant person.

4.

Vocal and able to keep student attention even late into the semester. Very clear with communicating ideas.

5.

She is very knowledgeable on the material and uses a variety of teaching styles to keep students engaged in the lessons...plus, she's very funny.

6.

Engaging, interesting, funny.

7.

Extensive knowledge of subject and ability to answer all questions

8.

she made it fun. economics wasnt boring this time around.

9.

I've recommended her to several people around school. She was quite possibly the best teacher I've ever had. I hated macro when I took it, so I wasn't looking foward to micro, but she somehow always finds a way to involve the class and keep everyone (a class of about 200) interested and entertained in the subject material.

10.

Good speaker and explainer

11.

Ability to command your attention.

12.

Uses a variety of teaching methods. Lecure, CPS questions, graphs...

13.

Superb! Very clear, fun teacher.

14.

very enthusiastic, knowledgeable, fun

15.

extra credit ideas

16.

All in all she was a good, easy to understand teacher.

17.

she made otherwise boring material interesting

18.

Ability to communicate hard subjects

19.

Use of different kinds of teaching methods. Understanding of the subject and her students. Very helpful outside of class.

20.

Energetic

21.

She really enjoys ecnomics and it came through her teaching...really made a difference.

22.

Very Knowledgeable about the subject and does a good job of conveying her knowledge to the students

23.

She incorporated movie clips and real life situations with the information she was teaching.

24.

25.

you can tell right off that she truly loves what she does! she is very entertaining and makes learning so much fun. i was completely engaged all semester! i made a c- in econ 2105 (macro) mostly because this subject is so foreign to me. shelby made me excited about economics and showed us as a whole how to see the world from an economist's pov. i have started to use so much of what she has taught me in my own life, it is sickening! i really really enjoyed this class, 95% of it was because of her. she is a true asset to the economics department and to the school as a whole.

26.

communicates effectively making course material easier to understand and stimulate my thinking.

27.

great lecturer

28.

The instructor was very open and knowledgeable about the subject. She was very active in relating to the content. The real life examples that she talked about were invaluable in helping the student understand what the concept meant.

29.

good teaching style, thank you for making previous exams available and having tons of extra credit assignments!

30.

Made class fun to be in, and I really learned a lot!!

Course weaknesses.

1.

APLIA homeworks! I hated them. They were very difficult and they took up soooo much of my time. I did not get much out of them at all (besides a headache). I would have rather spent that time taking more extra credit style quizzes. I learned more from those 5 questions than all of the aplia assignment.

2.

Aplia homework was extremely hard and required knowledge beyond what we covered in class

3.

Aplia took too long.

4.

Although the quizzes, lectures, aplia assignments, etc. keep students thinking about the material, the amount of work gets overwhelming at times.

5.

Aplia

6.

Too much Aplia.

7.

n/a

8.

Expected to learn on your own outside of class. On-line quizzes and Aplia should be used as a tool along with the class lecture but I felt that they were used in place of teaching.

9.

There are none.

10.

APLIA homework was way too hard!

11.

to many defintions

12.

She gave a lot of extra credit but, if you did the math, you found out that it really wasn't worht anything.

13.

Number of Students

14.

The online quizzes were always due on different days and I was not ever really sure when something was due...causing me to miss a couple.

15.

"aplia" online assignment system was far too cumbersome and time consuming. the course homework was due mostly on Sunday nights, when i work. since the homework accounted for the equivalence of a test i had to just click and hope i get it. my average grade was about 60% on the homework assignments. they did nothing to aid my comprehension of course material.

16.

There was too many assignment that were due before the information was taught in class. I almost felt as if I was teaching myself instead of Shelby Frost teaching me. Therefore, there wasn't too much marginal benefit of me going to class.

17.

Aplia, the home work assignment which the department newly implemented this summer. I will never understand how an individal can do home work and not know how they did on that home work until after the due date. The home work is graded, thus many students had to teach themeselves new material and the majority of us did poorly on the Aplia. The Aplia needs to be rid of or there needs to be some different way of the point distribution. The instructor talks to the students with an attitude, always joking or making smart remarks that at times are unwarranted and un needed.

18.

the subject itself, to me, is a little boring... just my own personal opinion (i'm a french major)

19.

Too much irrelavent work

20.

The course does not take into account the amount of effort that the student puts forth in understanding the coursework. For example, a lot of the concepts that i read about in the text book were not even mentioned in the examinations. It were the major points, and concepts that the students were being tested on. I worked hard reading the textbooks and taking notes, but that effort was not translated into better grades. I was lazy to do the Aplia Assignments, but i was very much punctual in reading the textbook, But reading the textbook was not important, only clicking the right answers on the website got you the points.

21.

too much aplia assigments, this course already requires a lot of outside time and the aplia assignments added to a more tremendous amount

22.

To many difficult graphs to understand.

Instructor weaknesses.

1.

None that I noticed, I enjoyed Dr. Frost very much and I would reccommend her to anyone.

2.

at the beginning of the semester she didnt use the mic so it was hard to hear her sometimes.

3.

None that I know of.

4.

SHE NEEDS TO PUT ALL OF HER REVIEW MATERIALS, STUDY GUIDE AND ANYTHING SHE KNOWS IT'S GOING TO BE ON THE EXAM IN "ONE FOLDER" INSTEAD OF WASTING STUDENTS PRECIOUS TIMES LOOKING ALL OVER THE PLACE AND READING EXAMS FROM 2002..... AND ENDED UP NOT DOING TOO WELL ON THE EXAMS.

5.

n/a

6.

Sometimes the material was not clearly gone over.

7.

Too nice?

8.

n/a

9.

Wasn't available to speak to students, we always had to go to the lab and sometimes they didn't explain topics the same way, which lead to inconsistencies and me teaching myself the material from the text book

10.

She was a really good teacher.

11.

Sometime after the midterm Dr Frost felt that the class might have been off schedule. in order to compensate for time she said "...i'm going to skip over the next 2 chapters, but hey, you guys are smart enough! you'll get it!!..." It was at that very moment that i lost all respect for the instructor and faith in her ability.

12.

She didn't take students suggestions in to consideration very much. She is quite harsh in answereing student's questions. She doesn't make the test very well based on the information she provides in class.

13.

none at all. go shelby.

14.

Didn't really take the time to help those in need

15.

The Instructor used the same test materials everytime. She was hesitant to be innovative with her tests and assignments. She relied heavily on the Aplia website to get her point across to the students. If there were to be no teacher at all, it wouldn't be that hard for students to grasp the concepts given all the resources that were available.

16.

took too much time dealing with the electrical equipments using the cps system

17.

Explain graphs more clearly.

Course suggestions for improvement.

1.

No more aplia. More Webct quizzes. Not much of the information that we were required to know for the exam was covered in class. I had to spend so much time out of class teaching myself rather than studying what I should have learned in class.

2.

More focus on quizzes and less on aplia.

3.

I think it would be more effective to limit the variety of online homework and extra credit opportunities. It's great that you give so many chances for extra credit, but it would be easier to comprehend the opportunities if they were limited to one website, instead of WebCT, Aplia, and CPS.

4.

.

5.

It was a lot of out of class work involved. I did complete most assignments and studied hard for exams, but I dont think I got the grade I had hoped for on exams.

6.

n/a

7.

Not everyone learns from graphs.

8.

I dont think the course can improve anymore. It is at its maximun equilibrium.

9.

cut down on aplia

10.

n/a

11.

Not so much out of class work would be an improvement. I struggled to keep up with quizzes and aplia assignments. I would have done better in the class if I didn't have so much outside work. Aplia seemed more of a waste than a help. It didn't follow exams at all. It was interesting, but too cumbersome.

12.

Assuming everybody has a great deal econ background makes the course more difficult then it has to be.

13.

do away with aplia

14.

.

15.

Rid econ 2106 of the Aplia homework assignment or at the least don't let it count as a test grade!

16.

can she teach all of my classes?

17.

Less work and spend more time explaining information

18.

The course was good overall. Its just that the students are not recognized for the work they put in to explore irrelevant, yet analogous topics. For example, when reading about monopolies, i spent time researching companies that were monopolistic in the United States economy, but that research and effort did not get me any points, or improve my grade point average. If the system continues to be that way, students will be discouraged to "look outside the box", and explore topics on their own.

19.

less aplia assignments, don't weight aplia as an exam grade

20.

Less graphs and more concepts.

Instructor suggestions for improvement.

1.

None, perfection needs no improvement.

2.

Needs to take into consideration that uncontrollable situtations arise in students lives. Not every one is trying to play on the instructor's sympathy in order to fix poor decision they made( like going to a party instead of studying, that is not the case here).I am currently unable to meet my basic survival needs, I don't know where I'm going to sleep each night and most days I don't even eat.I have tried to complete this semester despite my bad luck, but my efforts have not been a success. My suggestion for improvement: BE MORE COMPASSIONATE!

3.

since class was held in urban life building, it was difficult for me tio walk from aderhold to urban life in 15 minutes. I did not stall either. just be considerate of those who have a longer walk. I came in late, and late by like 2 minutes and the tests were already passed out. just be patient, and maybe give those poeple with longer walks a little more time to get there. All in all I enjoyed the teacher and I would definately recommmed her to other students taking this course.

4.

n/a

5.

Absolutely none.

6.

try not to tell so many stories

7.

do not test over material that is not covered in class.

8.

She needs to teach the information before giving assignments on it. She also needs to be more open-minded and understanding to student's suggestions

9.

none.

10.

A new instructor

11.

Do not rely so heavily on the Aplia Assignments. Its useless. Ask the students to read the textbook, and find a direct way to evaluate their efforts, rather than use a software to do so. Aplia is a very good source for evaluating students' understanding of concepts, but give students a break.

12.

be prepared with all the equipment beforehand

13.

Reccomend more outside sources for us to study with.

Comments on classroom environment (for example: temperature, audio/visual equipment, visibility, etc.).

1.

people spoke on their cellphones in class which was annoying

2.

very nice, wish people wouldn't text message each other in class.

3.

The document camera in UL 220 has a huge bubble in the center. Instructor had very good graphs, charts, and notes to show class, but it was difficult to work around the bright light in the center of the projection.

4.

the bubble on the screan when she would put up overhead sheets, it was hard to see some of the graphs b/c of this giant glare on the board.

5.

good

6.

It's that darn bubble always blocking things. Pop the bubble!

7.

frequently some of the lights wouldn't work and there was no place for me to plug in my laptop

always use the microphone

10.

Work on the bubble...and the font sizes...I could read things on the board if I sat beyond the fourth row.

11.

The environment was pleasent for me.

12.

smaller class sizes are more effective

13.

There is a lot of people in this class, so if you don't like big lecture classes. This isn't the class for you.

14.

as i said before, i was completely engaged all semester. the aplia assignments were a little tedious but honestly well worth the time spent on them. i wish the class size was a little smaller, a little more engaging on a person to person level as a 200 person class is usually. i would have liked to discussed more intimately the theories of economics with the teacher.

15.

Perfect environment.

16.

Everything was fine.
