The Department of Modern and Classical Languages offers the Master of
Arts (M.A.) degree in French, German, and Spanish. Each language has a
concentration in either literature and culture or applied linguistics and pedagogy.
The M.A. in French also offers a concentration in French Studies.
The M.A. degree with concentration in literature emphasizes
advanced study in language, culture, and literature. The concentration in
applied linguistics and pedagogy includes courses of particular interest to foreign
language teachers.
A variety of graduate seminars is offered in every language each
semester. Check the

The M.A. in French, German or Spanish is the right degree
for you if:
- You want to pursue a doctoral degree after completion of your M.A.
studies.
- You want to pursue or are already in the middle or high school
career.
- Are interested in teaching at the college level.
- You are seeking personal enrichment through the advanced study of a
foreign culture.
The M.A. can be taken together with the Teacher Certification, the
Translation and Interpretation Certification, and/or the Latin American
Studies Certification. These certification programs can be, and are often,
taken as stand-alone degrees, unrelated to the M.A. program.
High school teachers can easily take the courses to get certified or
re-certified for their profession at the Department of Modern and
