Morteza Rastegar Program in Iranian Geoscience Studies at Georgia State University
This program has been established as a result of a generous gift endowment from the Rastegar family to the College of Arts
and Sciences (Center for Middle East Peace, Culture and Development
) toward the promotion of Iranian (Persian) studies.
At the center of these studies is the Iranian Geological Program which is devoted to study the Geology of Iran. The
establishment of this program was in part made possible based on the existence of a multi disciplinary international
collaborative project in the Department of Geology at Georgia State University under the direction of Drs. A. Mohammad
Ghazi and A. A. Hassanipak. This project is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF
) and the objective is to study
the Tethyan
(Paleo-Indian Ocean) ophiolites (ancient oceanic crusts) as part of a regional studies for better understanding of
tectonics of Alpine-Himalayan orogenic belts and paleogeographic recontruction of Middle East and Mediterranean regions.
It should be pointed out that the funds derived from the Rastegar endowment are also being directed toward other important
areas of studies such as Political Science, Philosophy and Women's Studies.
