FIFTH EDITION OF THE ANNUAL UNDERGRADUATE MATHEMATICS COMPETITION, 2009

  • Date: Friday, April 3, starting at 1:15 pm in 120 KELL HALL.

  • The Undergraduate Competition: 112 Kell Hall, April 3 2009.

    This is a fun contest where students are given the chance to showcase their solving problem techniques. The problems will concentrate more on creativity and natural talent and less on long and routine computations. The problems will roughly be chosen from topics such as sequences, limits, continuity, differentiation and integration of one variable function (such as Math 2211), plus mathematical induction, sets and functions.

    The contest is open to any student who is currently enrolled in an undergraduate mathematics course at Georgia State. Those who participate will have the opportunity to solve some interesting problems, make new friends and discuss mathematics for a couple of hours.

    The exam will have three parts as follows.
    Part I : 6 multiple choice questions (5 min per problem). Each correct answer is 3 pts. Followed by a 10 minute break.
    Part II: 6 questions that require an answer (5 min per problem). Each correct answer is 5pts. Followed by a 10 minute break.
    Part III: 2 10 minute problems. Correct solution is 10 pts.
    The first three teams will get prizes in GSU bookstore gift certificates. The winning teams are decided based upon the total number of points with a minimum of 35 points needed to qualify for an award.

    First prize: 100 dollars; Second prize: 70 dollars: Third prize: 40 dollars. The Funds come from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
    To enroll, please send an e-mail message to Dr. Florian Enescu at fenescu@gsu.edu listing your team name, a Math class that you are currently taking and the student ID for each member. Each team can have anywhere from one to three members. Register early, the number of seats is limited!

    Third prize: Vincent Laufer, Mauricio Pava, Ahmed Resan (Team: Free pizza)
