The Department of Managerial Sciences at Georgia State University
offers both graduate and undergraduate students a field study course
in which they work with Atlanta
entrepreneurs who are starting, expanding, changing or turning round
their business. Students might help founders turn their ideas into
a viable business, determine the feasibility of offering a new product
or service in an existing firm, plan a new marketing effort or many
other things. Students will also have a chance to observe owners,
founders, and entrepreneurial managers at close range and to see
for themselves what makes an entrepreneur successful or unsuccessful.
Students who make a grade of B or better in the course will be granted
a $1000 scholarship. Between 20 to 25 students are accepted in each
class and the course will be offered in the fall and spring semesters.
The class will meet for about two weeks at the beginning of the
semester and, thereafter, students will work with an entrepreneur
at least 8 hours per week, and 10 hours would be better. Students
who work and go to school may need to make special arrangements
with their employers. Students will be responsible for developing
with the entrepreneur a plan for the field study and will communicate
regularly with the course instructor. Near the end of the semester,
students will report on their experiences. Students' contributions
to the business and what they have learned will be evaluated by
both the instructor and the entrepreneur.
The undergraduate course is MGS.
4590: Entrepreneurship Field Study. The graduate version
is MGS. 8590: Field
Study in Entrepreneurship . Registration for and admission to
either course requires the permission of the instructor. Click on
the links above to view the syllabus for both the courses and please
see the deadline below.
If You Are A Company that wants to provide an opportunity
for a student, click Company
Form here and fill in the requested information. You"ll have
a choice about which students you want to work with, and students
will have a choice about which companies they want to work with.
Students will work 8 hours or more per week for a semester.
There is a $1000 fee for companies once they are matched with a
student. That money goes primarily to pay the scholarships the students
receive. We expect that students will have frequent access to founding
entrepreneurs or top managers of the companies. The students are
expected to be working on something that adds value to the company.
The companies define what those activities will be, and a wide variety
of things are possible.
If You Are A Student and would like to apply to be admitted,
please click on and complete the Student Form , and submit
it. In addition, please fax or, preferably, attach your résumé to
an e-mail to Dr. Greg Henley (ghenley@gsu.edu)
You will have a choice about which companies you want to work with,
and companies will indicate which students they want to work with.
