Finding Out About Each Other.....find someone who speaks French, was born in Moscow, and so forth.

Environmental Issues: Which are the most important? Our results: garbage disposal and the impact of the atmosophere on human heath. For our discussion we discussed the following:

  • Disposal of nucelar waste
  • Garbage disposal
  • Global warming
  • Pollution of oceans
  • Rainforest deforestation
  • Impact of atmosophere on human heath

Teams discussed what they thought were the most important environmental issues and then posted their opinions in the project bulletin board.

Developing Web-Based Modules....we started our work by doing a web-based module, as our students would. The Web-based moduled, Project Ozone can be found by clicking here.

  • The Air Pollution Project
  • Analyzing the Web-Based Module

Identification of Web-based Module Topics: We brainstormed what we thought might be some important topics for our modules. Some results:

  • Influence of climate change
  • Ecology of Population
  • Water Pollution
  • Garbage disposal
  • Urban Sprawl
  • Rainforest Destruction

Internet Resources. Tom worked with us to use the Internet to find reources related to the topics that we discussed in the morning.

Project Themes...we left for the day thinking about what topic our group might work on to develop a complete Web Based Module.

Outside the classroom we use the Ecobadge to measure ground level ozone. On this day, the ozone level was 50 parts per billion, which meant that the air was not unhealthy. We also measured the temperature, cloud cover, wind and used a GPS system to determine our location which was latitude 34 N; longitude 85 W.

Deveoping a Web-based Lesson

  • Identifying Your Topics
  • Discussion
  • Concept Mapping your topic

Presentation

Internet Tools

  • Chat with American teachers at GSU
  • Other tools: Bulletin Board, e-Group, chat

Teams identified topics, which included Air Quality, Water Pollution, Composting, and Acid rain. These will form the basis for four Web-based Modules.

Web-Based Module Design

We developed the first lesson for each of the modules and presented them to each other

Service Learning: Dr. Julie Weisberg

Service learning: any learning experience in which students learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service experiences that met actual community needs.

Concurrent Sessions....we choose from among four workshops that we could attend. The workshops were repeated

  • Internet resources with Tom Brown
  • Sampling and reliability of measurements by Ted Colton
  • Developing your module on-line by Jack Hassard
  • Consulting on your module with Julie Weisberg

The groups are hard at work on their modules. Here the "acid rain" group is discussing the first activity of their module, and talking about the kinds of service learning projects they want to include in their module.

Structure and Plan for the Modules....we discussed the overall structure of the modules. We agreed that each module will have from 5 to 8 lessons. Today we continued our work on the module we started yesterday.
