Blue Ice
Glacier Ice When ice is aged, it appears blue
due to the compacting of water molecules and the elimination
of air over thousands of years. Port Lockroy - south of the
Gerlache Strait and through the beautiful Neumayer Channel.
This was the location of a British station established in
1944. An extensive gentoo rookery is nearby. Port Lockroy is
a supurb natural harbour where many glaciers empty into the
bay. Photo by: Nydia R. Hanna, MV
