The Whaling Industry
Whalers dominated the Antarctic
waters in the early 1900's and late 1800's. They would beach
a whale in the late winter, and then remove what they needed
off the carcass in the summer. Paradise Harbour was so named by
whalers in the early years of this century. Gentoo penguins
have set up rookeries in and around the left over bones of
whales killed 80-90 years ago. A number of glaciers empty
into this harbour on the west side of the Antarctic
Peninsula. Photo by: Nydia R. Hanna, MV
