Black Ice- Freezing Sea Water

As sea water begins to freeze, it forms into a thickened form called Black Ice. This is the first phase in the development of Sea Ice.

As we entered the Lemaire Channel of the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, we began to see icebergs, remnants of sea ice and some pancake ice. Since we were sailing these waters in the Antarctic summer, the ice had been melting but the water was freezing in some areas because it was an unusually cold day (-10 F). The captain was concerned that the water could freeze up around us as we traveled through the Channel.
