Glaciers and Icebergs

Snow packed on snow over time creates glaciers. The movement of these glaciers down cliffs in Antarctica sends the glacier to the ocean over time. As the glacial ice meets the ocean, icebergs break off, or calve, and float off into the ocean. These Glacial cliffs are miles high.

The Lemaire Channel was discovered by a German Expedition in 1873-74. It was first traversed by the Belgian explorer Adrien de Gerlache who named it after Charles Lemaire, the explorer of the Congo. It is about 7 miles long and just one mile wide. Bordered on each side by sheer, precipitous cliffs, the Lemaire separates Booth Island from the mainland of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula.
