Glaciers and Penguin Rookeries
Glaciers formed over thousands of
years cover 99% of Antarctica. In the summer, many of the
glaciers begin to calve off icebergs into harbours and bays.
Penguin rookeries generally thrive where the freshwater
glaciers empty. Paradise Harbour on the west coast
of the Antarctic Peninsula. On this cold morning we visited
the scientists at the Chilean station of Gonzalez Videla.
They had not seen any women in 5 months! A number of
glaciers empty into this harbour where a Gentoo rookery
exists. The outstanding blue color of the bottom layer of
the glacier shows the age of the compacted
freshwater. Photo by: Nydia R. Hanna, MV
