Welcome to the PMAP Internship Schedule!

How should this schedule be used?

This schedule should help you to stay on-track with the internship course. It is intended to complement the Internship Checklist, which you may also find useful. In addition to these electronic resources, we offer optional in-office sessions all year long, and we answer individual questions as they arise. We also supervise the internship final sessions that occur at the end of each academic term.

We do understand that internship experiences do not perfectly match the GSU academic calendar or this semester calendar. Interns are not required to complete all of their requirements in single semester. For example, if you begin an internship late in the spring semester, you can register for summer and then finish up in the fall. All sorts of combinations are possible. You do need to register and pay for a class to receive academic credit, but you have the flexibility needed to fit your internship into the rest of your life.

We do understand that internship experiences do not perfectly match the GSU academic calendar or this semester calendar. Interns are not required to complete all of their requirements in A single semester. For example, if you begin an internship late in the spring semester, you can register for summer and then finish up in the fall. All sorts of combinations are possible. You do need to register and pay for a class to receive academic credit, but you have the flexibility needed to fit your internship into the rest of your life. Finally, remember that you only need to pay for the internship course once, reagardless of how many semesters you need to complete your work.

Do not forget that all interns are required to follow postings on the internship bulletin boards.  This course offers you freedom and flexibility, but regular communication with the internship coordinators is your responsibility.

Help us communicate effectively with you.

Email has become a primary mode of communication and must be conducted well to support our work. Below are basic requirements we consider essential to our effective Email communication during this course:

  1. Choose your Email address carefully at the beginning of the course. Pick one Email address for yourself and stick with it, which allows us to better track your activities and questions.
  2. For the internship course, please be consistent about emailing Professor Streib, Professor Willoughby, or both of us. Switching styles makes it hard for us to track your progress in this course. Likewise, just use one email address for each of us.
  3. Use an Email address with some portion of your name in it. GSU provides you with a student Email account that includes some or all of your name, for example.
  4. Use a signature in your Email that provides your contact information, should we need to contact you another way.
  5. If you decide to correspond with us via the Email component at the course on uLearn, stick to this form of electronic communication throughout the course. Do not switch between personal Email and the course Email throughout the semester.
  6. Confine our Email conversations to a single Email thread. Respond to any Email from us by using the "Reply with Message" option.
  7. Do not send the same Email and/or attachments to us multiple times. We keep track of your correspondence and try to respond to all Email messages in a timely manner. Still, mistakes do happen. If you do not hear back within a reasonable period of time (a few days, for example), please send a reminder.
  8. Use meaningful subject lines in your course Emails. We may need to search for your Email sometime in the future. A relevant subject line will facilitate such a search.

If you have a complex problem...how about an online meeting? This is best if you have a headset, but easily done. We understand that getting to campus to discuss problems or concerns can be difficult, and this is why we offer the online meeting option. We can also do a conference call, of course.

Do you have an In-Progress grade from a previous semester?

You would have an In-Progress (IP) grade if you registered for the internship in the past (not for this semester) and did not get a final grade. PLEASE TALK TO THE COORDINATORS if you have an IP AND you are graduating at the end of this semester. All of your internship requirements need to be completed earlier when you are graduating and you also have an IP grade from a previous semester. Good communication is essential to avoiding problems.

Note that there are no special considerations needed if you are graduating at the end of the term when you registered. For example, you registered for spring and you are graduating at the end of the spring term--no problem. You just need to meet the same deadlines as any other course.

When is stuff due?

We give deadlines to guide you through your internship, but we do allow exceptions when our deadlines do not match your internship responsibilities. So, do your best to stick with our schedule, but do not worry if you diverge from the schedule at some point. Remember, though, that we have little flexibility for the end-of-semester deadlines, which is especially important for GRADUATING students who have an IP grade from a PREVIOUS semester.

As Soon As Possible REQUIRED

Complete the internship data sheet. Check our uLearn home page to access this survey. This survey gives us important information about you and your internship position.

As Soon As Possible REQUIRED

Submit your Complete Program Plan. The Program Plan document is available on the Web in Acrobat or Word format. You and your employer should complete and sign the program plan. It can be delivered in person, sent by regular mail, Emailed, or sent to the internship fax line: 1-206-203-2056. The fax line is a toll call, but it provides us with an electronic copy of your plan. Of course, you can also mail your plan. Receipt of your program plan will be recorded on your grade sheet within 1 week of its submission.

We like to have complete Program Plans AS CLOSE TO THE START OF YOUR INTERNSHIP AS POSSIBLE. The Plan provides an outline of your duties and responsibilities, as well as learning outcomes while working at your internship. Developing a good plan with your internship supervisor will help make your experience a good one.

If you mail your plan to Professor Streib or Professor Willoughby, be sure to ADDRESS YOUR ENVELOPE TO ONE OF US AND use the following address:

Andrew Young School of Policy Studies
Georgia State University
P.O. Box 3992
Atlanta, GA 30302-3992

As Soon As Possible

REQUIRED

Sign up for a final internship session. We will post a Google docs spreadsheet listing a series of sessions on the uLearn page. You can add your name to any open session, though sessions are sometimes reserved just for those graduating students who also hold an IP grade from a previous semester.

You can remove your name from a session and move to another one anytime you like. Obviously, do not take a slot from another student. Please remove your name if you find that you are not going to attend a session, so that others may take your place.

YOU ONLY NEED TO ATTEND ONE FINAL SESSION, and you are not required to complete all internship requirements prior to attending a final internship session.

After Two Weeks of Work

REQUIRED

Post a description of your internship position and activities on the Internship Descriptions Bulletin Board. Your description should be several paragraphs in length. No attachments please.  Make sure and tell us how your internship fits into your career plans.

March 21, 2012

REQUIRED

Consider giving an evaluation form to your employer. We need this back to us before final grades are due. There is an evaluation form available on the Web in both Word and Acrobat formats.  It can be returned to us in person, sent by regular mail, Emailed, or sent to the internship fax line: 1-206-203-2056.  Make sure your employer uses the address provided above to send the evaluation by regular mail.  It is up to your employer to decide whether to go over the form with you or not.  You can handle the delivery, or your employer can get the form to us directly.

April 18, 2012

REQUIRED

All remaining materials are due for students holding IP grade and also graduating this semester. All internship materials are due today at 5 PM (See the listing of materials below.) This is only if you hold an IP and are also graduating. Note that there will be a final session for all IP students on the afternoon of the 20th. Let us know if you cannot be there, as this is really important. You can bring your final materials to the session.

April 18-27, 2012

REQUIRED

Attend a final internship session. The first session will be reserved for those students up for graduation and holding an IP grade from a previous semester.

When you attend a final session, be prepared to discuss what you learned on your internship, how it fit with your career goals, and the business model followed where you interned. How are funds raised? How are these funds allocated? These are apprenticeships for many of you. Consider these questions: What is the mission? Who is in charge? What qualifications does it take for a top position? What is the pay range? What does it take to advance (education, skills, experience, attitude, performance level, etc.)?

April 27, 2012

REQUIRED

Deliver all remaining internship materials.  All internship materials are due today by 5pm. Students will receive or keep an IP grade if this deadline is not met. Here is a list of the items that are typically remaining:

  • The Final Report. Guidelines are available to help you. The papers can be submitted electronically on our uLearn home page. Otherwise, it can be returned to us in person, sent by regular mail, Emailed, or sent to the internship fax line: 1-206-203-2056.  You may also submit your report electronically, on our uLearn page.

  • The Time Sheet.  You are required to maintain a time and activity report, documenting the number of hours that you have worked.  This sheet must be signed by your supervisor and turned in once you have completed your internship hours.  Please use our Acrobat or Word Form versions.

    • You may also use a suitable substitute TIME SHEET from where you are working; THAT IS, YOU CAN USE A TIME SHEET THAT IS PREPARED BY YOUR EMPLOYER, IF YOU PREFER. Your time sheet can be returned to us in person, sent by regular mail, Emailed, or sent to the internship fax line: 1-206-203-2056.
  • An Employer Evaluation in either Word or Acrobat formats. This is something we want for our course records, but also ask to discuss this evaluation with your employer. Most of these tend to be very good, so this discussion is likely to be positive, but make an effort to find areas where you can improve.
    • Do not be too sensitive about any critical statements of your work by your employer. A good internship is one in which you performed for the organization, with no complaints. A great internship is one in which you learned where you were weak in terms of skills and knowledge, accepted legitimate feedback from your internship supervisor, and then built new skills and improved your performance.
    • Depending on your internship situation and goals, you may also want to discuss staying on with the organization where you interned.

Loose Ends

Now that you have completed the course, please fill out our evaluation form. An evaluation survey will be made available on the internship home page after 12 noon today. Remember what the internship course has provided in addition to excellent working experience:  Freedom, flexibility, and regular communication!

April 29, 2012

REQUIRED

We strongly recommend that you review your internship record on our uLearn page to see what requirements are left. This is the official record.

Get in touch with us immediately if you have a question about your course record or your final grade.  We cannot guarantee a final grade for this session if your materials were not in by the deadlines noted in this schedule.

Students always ask if they can submit materials after the deadline. Absolutely! However, your grade may not be submitted in time to show up on your summer grades. This is not so good if you are planning to graduate. Students missing the deadline normally get an IP grade, which remains until all work is completed. Graduating students do not have this option.

Remember--you only register once for the internship course, regardless of whether you finish in a single semester or not.

When can you meet with the internship coordinators?

Please help us to share your internship experience with other students!

We would like to continue to update the internship experiences page. Did you do an internship that you think should be shared with others? Are there any documents, publications, pictures, or videos that could go on the page?

Let us know if you would like information from your internship featured on this page. We hope that this page will give others ideas on how to make the most of their internship experiences. You are welcome to be involved in the design of the page. Let us know if you are interested!

If you are continuing with an IP grade, remember that it is your responsibility to stay in touch with the internship coordinators and monitor the future internship schedules. Students with an IP complete each internship requirement once, but they stretch their work over two (or more) semesters. As noted above, only one registration is needed.
