New book

A new book on observational methods, sequential analysis and GSEQ 5 is currently in the making (April 2011). For now, the Help file in GSEQ 5 is an alternative source of information.

Bakeman, R., & Quera, V. (forthcoming). Sequential Analysis and Observational Methods for the Behavioral Sciences. Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press.

Old book

The original SDIS-GSEQ programs (versions 1.1 and 1.2 for DOS) were distributed on a floppy disk together with this book:

About the book:

"Psychologists, educators, animal behaviorists, and other researchers who observe and study sequences of behavior have found Bakeman and Gottman's Observing Interaction helpful in planning their research and analyses. Now its companion volume, Analyzing Interaction, provides the practical underpinnings needed to carry out the sorts of sequential analyses suggested by the earlier book. First, the authors introduce a simple notational scheme for sequential data (SDIS or Sequential Data Interchange Standard). They then discuss basic sequential statistics, elaborating and extending the material presented in Observing Interaction. Two computer programs are included with the book on a floppy diskette for the IBM personal computer. The SDIS program checks and prepares sequential data for efficient analysis. Then the General Sequential Querier program (GSEQ) tallies sequential data into contingency tables designed by the user and computes a variety of sequential statistics."

Contents:

Applied sequential analysis: Basic tools and terms / Sequential examples: Talk, attention, distress, and infants / Basic SDIS: Sessions, conditions, times, and events / Advanced SDIS: State, timed event, and interval data / Basic GSEQ: Specifying target and given codes / Modifying SDIS Data / Specifying time windows / Computing contingency table statistics with GSEQ / Running SDIS and GSEQ: The GSEQ user interface / Advanced GSEQ: Practical problems and solutions / Appendix A: Installing and running SDIS and GSEQ / Appendix B: SDIS syntax and GSEQ commands / Appendix C: Critical values for Chi-square.

The book is out of print since February 2005. You can look for copies at Amazon.com: hardcover / paperback
