Recommended Public Administration Readings
for
Department of Political Science Ph.D. Students

This guide has been prepared by the Public Administration Faculty of the Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies, School of Policy Studies. It is expected that Political Science Ph.D. students seeking to qualify in the public administration field will have read and be familiar with the works listed below. This list is intended to be a foundation, and it does not provide citations to specialized sources in fields such as budgeting, public management, human resources, and others that may be of special interest to certain students. All students, therefore, should consult closely with the public administration faculty who will be writing and reading their field examinations. These consultations should begin during the first quarter of doctoral studies at GSU. This list of texts will be updated annually.

Doctoral students are also expected to maintain currency through regular reading of major scholarly research journals in the field. These include The Public Administration Review, Administration and Society, American Review of Public Administration, Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, and The Public Administration Quarterly.
