Album 88 Builds to WRASFEST with Special Programming and a Big Finale!

Wednesday, Dec 12, 2007

WRASFest Friday is almost upon us and Album 88 will be ringing it in with style with a college radio look back, a special Georgia Music Show and a big farewell from One Step Beyond.

Over 8 hours on Thursday and Friday, General Manager and Quintessential College Show co-host Bryce will be giving listeners a dose of quintessential college radio with "88 1's from the Oughts." This will commemorate the past seven years of college radio with cuts only from CDs that have topped the College Media Journal's Radio 200 charts. Part One will air on Thursday from 2-6pm.

Following that will be a special edition of the Georgia Music Show at 6pm in which Adam and Danielle present interviews and music from many of the great artists who will be gracing the Eyedrum stage on Friday night.

On Friday from 10am-2pm, part two of "88 1's from the Oughts." Also, Brandon will say farewell to his loyal WRAS following with a special four hour finale of "One Step Beyond" from 4-8pm: with all the best from his library of ska music.

And keep your ears tuned to the dial as the weekend bleeds into next week as we say farewell to more of wonderful loyal DJs who are graduating and moving on to bright horizons, including the Antagonist and Q-Storm from the Weekend Wrecking Crew.

As the Antagonist always says: keep it locked to the left on 88.5. And don't forget, doors open at 6pm for WRASFest on Friday!!

WRAS Hits XM Airwaves for 11/18 Special

Monday Nov 12, 2007

The slogan for WRAS-Atlanta, the 100,000 watt student voice of Georgia State University, is "Left of the Dial, Right on the Music." From 4-6pm EST on Nov. 18, however, it won't just be left of the dial but on the XM Dial. WRAS will be featured on the XMUNation program, the XMU Student Exchange Program from 4-6pm EST on November 18 on XM radio, XM43 & DirectTV831.

The Student Exchange Program provides XM listeners with a sample of playlists from college radio stations all across the country. On WRAS' program, they'll be hearing from a station recently voted "Best Non-Commercial Station" in Atlanta by Creative Loafing readers as well as one of only four finalists for the CMJ Award for "Best Station."

"This is a great opportunity to represent the station on a national scale," WRAS manager Bryce McNeil remarked, "we've involved several members of our staff to put this playlist together. So it's not only a good representation of the WRAS sound, but a small sample of the dedicated students we have on management. We've been pretty fortunate to have an administration at Georgia State that's been supportive of a student-run 100,000 watt station, something that is quite honestly the biggest anomaly you can find in radio." The show will feature songs currently featured in WRAS' album-based rotation, including many acts from the Georgia area.

WRAS/DAEL Lifting Off with Sea Wolf on 88.5 FM

Friday Nov 2, 2007

Tommorrow afternoon (November 3, 2007) on the Quintessential College Show, we premiere what will be an ongoing effort by WRAS to bring you live recordings of the finest in college radio. This past Monday, WRAS General Manager and QCS co-host Bryce McNeil chatted with Sea Wolf frontman Alex Brown Church at the Digital Arts and Entertainment Labratory. The band also played some songs from their latest album, "Leaves in the River," described as "far more substantive—and lusciously eerie—than your typical mid-tempo indie rock" (Tracy Moore, Nashville Cream).

This is the beginning of a collaboration between WRAS and the DAEL in producing live-in-studio high-definition performances for radio content and streaming video. Streaming video will soon be provided on the DAEL's YouTube channel via its official website,
http://www.entertainmentresearch.org/.

You can hear the first in these efforts on the Quintessential College Show this Saturday from 1-3pm on WRAS-Atlanta, 88.5 FM.

Misprint in Creative Loafing Article about WRAS

Despite what is says in a Creative Loafing article printed today (4/12/07), WRAS will NOT
be having a benefit concert on April 14. We look forward to having another benefit later this
year in December. Hope there wasn't too much confusion1

Music Directors at South by Southwest (SXSW)

Music Director Erich Hilkert and Assistant Music Director Farbod Kokabi
are currently in Austin, Texas for SXSW. The festival lasts through March
18. Assistant Music Director Mike Zarin is still in Atlanta and you can
reach him via email. If you need to track music, please wait until Erich
and Farbod return on March 19. For those of you lucky enough to be in Austin,
I'm officially jealous.

Robert Morea

Thursday, June 22, 2006

Dear Friends of WRAS-Atlanta,

It's hard for me to even begin writing this because it's something I never thought I would have to do. It is
with a very, very heavy heart and spirit that I inform all of you that Robert Morea, Program Director at
WRAS-Atlanta, passed away on Tuesday, June 20 at his hospital in Birmingham, Alabama.

Robert had been in the hospital for several weeks with what appeared to be a very severe case of pneumonia.
Complications arose when Robert's condition was not improving and the doctor's realized he was fighting off
a very rare strain of pneumonia. Robert's mother called me last week to inform me that Robert was very, very
sick and the doctors had sedated him heavily. Robert's mother, Kathy, called me around 5:30 PM on Wednesday,
June 21 to tell me he passed away.

Kathy also told me about something I don't think Robert ever told anyone--he didn't even tell me. Robert was
born with cystic fibrosis which is an inherited disease which attacks the gastrointestinal and respiratory systems.
Normally, children born with this disease don't make it past their early twenties. Robert, like other people
with CF, had a double lung transplant three years ago. He was given a new set of healthy lungs which were supposed
to allow him to live to be at least 40 or 50 years old. Robert passed away at age 27. I was not aware that Robert
had CF or that he had received a double lung transplant. I imagine if Robert's family wants any donations made it
will be to whichever foundation supports research on cystic fibrosis.

On a personal note, Robert has been one of my very best friends at WRAS. He and I hosted the Georgia Music Show
together and in August we would have been sharing that responsibility for a year. He has always been my concert
buddy and a really great friend. Robert was absolutely psyched to be hired as Program Director. His mother wanted
me to tell all of you that Album 88 is the reason he decided to come back to school after his transplant and he loves
the station a lot. One of the reasons he was sedated last week was because he was stressed out about not being able
to get his Programming work done and he wasn't able to listen to 88.5 from the hospital.

On Friday, June 23 I plan to use the day to pay tribute to Robert's work at Album 88. I'll probably play some of his
favorite local artists and all who wish to take part may do so. This includes anyone in the local music community who
wishes to say anything or any WRAS staff. If you wish to take part in our tribute, please email me directly at wras88@gmail.com.
You may call the station during our broadcast tomorrow at 404.651.4488. I plan on dedicating our fall benefit to his
memory and service to WRAS.

Sincerely,

Cassie Smith
General Manager of WRAS

"Kimberdoo" and 'Music for the Prepubescent' highlighted in Creative Loafing

A favorite with kids young and old, every Saturday from 10am - 11am tune in to the Music for the Prepubescent show on album 88!

Curt Holman of Creative Loafing named this Album 88 show as one of his four favorite radio shows in Atlanta.
"If you want a dizzying childhood flashback or wish to broaden the musical interests of your own kids, "Prepubescent" provides
a kind of public service. The programming tends to avoid contemporary children's musicians like the Wiggles in favor of either retro acts... "

Read all about it and see Kimberdoo's beaming persona: click here.

Album 88 Honored by Creative Loafing Critics and Readers

The votes are in for Creative Loafing's Best of Atlanta for 2005, and WRAS, Atlanta "Album 88" was voted:
By the critics as:
"Best Radio Station that Keeps Getting Better"
By Creative Loafing Readers as:
"Best Non-Commercial Radio Station"
In fact, we have been honored by Creative Loafing readers and critics for the past four
years in a row! We truly appreciate this support and love from the Atlanta community. We
keep giving it back 24 x 7 from frequency modulation 88.5.

There can be only one...

October 1, 2004

Once again the press has recognized what we at the station already knew, and you the
listener should already realize - we own the ATL radio scene...

Creative Loafing Best of 2004:
Critics' Picks - Best Radio Station For All Your Needs

So sayeth the Loafers:
"Cowtipper's Delight," "Lethal Injection" and "Martinis con Queso" are just a few of the cocktail-
sounding concoctions on WRAS-FM (88.5). With blues, classical, hip-hop, local, indie-rock, world,
industrial, punk, jazz and ska shows in the shaker, among others, there's music for all tastes.
Expect some changes come fall, when the station finally settles into its new digs and adds some fresh
shows and voices to the roster. But when you turn the dial to the Georgia State student-run station,
you'll still be guaranteed the constant of diversity in music.)

We couldn't have said it better ourselves, but it's always nice when someone else says it for you.
And let us not forget the voices of the hordes of loyal WRAS fans who shouted our praises:

Reader's Picks:
Best Overall Station
Best Non-Commercial Station
As much as we appreciate the ink, you shouldn't rely on what others tell you about Album 88, tune in
yourself and bask in our warm glow of non-commercial goodnesss!
