Directory Services Project

Proposed schedule of activity - for discussion purposes

Implementation items:

  • Build interface as seamless unit (without needing to exit to run function).
  • Implement COI_Objectclass, COI_attributes LDAP data structures (cf. HICSS-36)
  • Select directory(ies) by browsing to, selecting URL.
  • Select directory from database store - pick from list of 200+ Internet2 schools
  • Select objectClasses, attributes, or template from "DNA" Library for clustering
  • Choose visual display type (SOM, LSA/SOM, SFA, text?,.)
  • Time lapse options.  Observe clustering in process; compare different timestamp states
  • Directory node Analysis (DNA) Thumbprint function - snapshot of SOM map + timestamp + LDAP URL + version info.
  • Enable user creation of new objects (implies writable LDAP.)  "What if" scenarios
  • Labels for SFA
  • Develop color maps for SFA?
  • Implement 3D stereo version of SFA
  • Implement "demo game" - can you match LDAP to vendor?  Can you locate <x> fastest?  Can you find most common <object>?  Compare high scores?  Choose your avatar (iPlanet, eDir. UMich, Georgetown.?)?
  • Implementation of genetic algorithms
  • Implementation of drill down levels of clustering & visualization

Experimental validation:

  • Compare SOM (1, 0) vs. SOM (Levenshtein) vs. LSA - recommendations?
  • Compare LSA where K=128, 92, 64.  what's the best K?
  • Compare iPlanet experts to Novell experts to Openldap.are they different
  • Can clustering of standard LDAPs (out of the box) from all "major" vendors, reveal core LDAP?
  • Compare SFA to SOM
  • Compare SOMs (hexagonal, rectangular, network graph) for directories
  • Can DNA (Directory Node Analysis) thumbprint be useful as to identifying directory?
  • How certain can comparison of 2 thumbprints be?
  • Can library of DNA thumbprints be helpful in finding peers or exemplar LDAPs?
  • Efficacy of genetic algorithms
  • Can we build "WordNet for LDAP"?

Papers/presentations/proposals:

  • JMIS?
  • December ITR proposal - draft as paper?
  • Internet2 Presentation
  • Demo for IS&T, CIS, ACM chapter?
  • Web page for project
  • Web based demo
  • Using DNA thumbprint signature to identify trends and evolution of cohort groups.
  • Do we need experts or can we use artifacts (deployed LDAP)?
  • Catalog of deployed LDAPs - analysis of vendor base, objectclass & attributes
  • Building "Wordnet" for LDAP.
