Atlanta Herpetology Club Possibilities

Atlanta is a great place for herpetologists and herp enthusiasts. Located in the Piedmont region of Georgia, we have relatively easy access to the Upper Coastal Plain, Appalachian Plateau, Ridge and Valley, and the Blue Ridge Regions of Georgia. (We may even take a field trip to the Lower Coatal Plain Region in the future.) In addition, Atlanta has amazing resources in terms of herpetological resources such as those at the Atlanta Botanical Garden and Zoo Atlanta. There are lots of possibilities and we are open to new ideas from new members.

Here are some possible future activities:

Talks by staff members of Zoo Atlanta, visiting researchers and faculty at Georgia State, University of Georgia, and other Atlanta schools, and staff at the Georgia Department of Natural Resources
Field trips to Herp shows in Atlanta (e.g. The Georgia Reptile Expo is ususally in October annually).
Herp survey competition with the Herpetological Society at University of Georgia
Educational outreach to K-12 school groups and the public in the Atlanta area
Sampling for chytrid fungus among amphibians in Georgia.
Field trips to the special herpetological exhibits at Fernbank Museum of Natural History (e.g. the previous "Frogs: A Chorus of Colors" "Lizards and Snakes: Alive!" or "Geckos: Tails to Toepads" exhibits)
A group trip for a course in reptile and amphibian identification at the Smoky Mountain Field School
Surveys of hellbenders in northern Georgia
A repeat field trip to Atlanta Botanical Garden to see the frog collections
A repeat field trip to Zoo Atlanta to see the herpetological collections
A repeat field trip to Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge
Field trip to Tennessee Aquarium to view the herpetological collections
Design and sale of our very own Atlanta Herpetology Club t-shirts (submit design ideas to President Evan Hutto)
