Assistantships & Awards

Students enrolled in the School are eligible to receive assistantships and awards in a number of categories.

All graduates are eligible for Graduate Assistantships and most are expected to be Graduate Teaching Assistants during part of their graduate career.  Undergraduate students may be selected as Presidential Scholars and can apply for positions as Student Assistants.

The Chandler Awards are competitive awards presented annually to select incoming graduate students. Faculty from each discipline nominate candidates during the application review process. All applicants are eligible and automatically considered. Nominees are chosen by area faculty based on strength of portfolio, academic record and potential to succeed in the graduate program. A committee of faculty from across disciplines within the school of art and design makes the final selection. These awards pay an annual stipend for the full three-year program for MFA candidates. MA candidates are funded for the two-years.

Ernest G. Welch Graduate Fellowship: This multi-year graduate support award and mentorship program is presented to highly meritorious graduate students in the Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design, as ascertained by application portfolios and an expectation of future professional success in the visual arts. The Welch Fund Faculty Committee selects the Welch Graduate Fellows.

The Honors Program Awards Ceremony and the presentation of prizes at the Juried Student Exhibition give faculty opportunities to reward graduate and undergraduate students for their achievements.
