General information from the Graduate Director

Thank you for your interest in the Welch School of Art and Design Graduate Program. This document is designed to help you understand the application process.

All applicants to the School of Art & Design are required to submit:

  • a completed online application (no paper applications accepted)
  • a $50 application fee 
  • a portfolio for the MFA and MA.ed degrees 
  • a writing sample for Art History
  • a statement of intent 
  • three letters of recommendation, Studio and Art Education 
  • three letters of recommendation, Art History 
  • two official transcripts from all other schools that you have attended
  • GRE or MAT test scores for the M.A.Ed. degree in Art EducationGRE test scores for the MA degree in Art History

A number of lab and research assistantships are available to new applicants. These provide for a full tuition waiver and a monthly stipend. Teaching assistantships are generally not available to new applicants.

Please note: Deadlines are not postmark deadlines. All materials must be in the College of Arts and Science Graduate office by the deadline. Due to the volume of applications submitted each year, a return receipt is highly recommended. It is also recommended that you submit all your materials at least a month in advance.
