Established by Larry Walker, former Director and Professor Emeritus, in memory of his mother.  In establishing the award Larry wrote:
By mainstream criteria Casanna Walker was not particularly artistic but she did some quilting and a lot of sewing while raising 11 children. She had strong ethical beliefs in and sensitivity toward others and she fully believed in the value of education. Above all, she respected industrious people who worked hard to improve their situations and the lives of others. Casanna Wood Walker was in many respects the embodiment of a hardworking, tenacious individual who was able to rise above adversity with dignity and self-respect intact.
