Junco Sato Pollack is textile artist/designer, researcher, and educator.
She has been an Associate Professor of Textiles at the Earnest G. Welch School of Art and Design of Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia since 1992.

Pollack received a MFA in Textile Design from the School for American Craft, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in Rochester, NY in 1991 and a BA in English Linguistics and Literature from Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo, Japan in 1972.

Pollack's training includes a professional apprenticeship with a master silk weaver and dyer in Kyoto, Japan (1974-5, 1978-9), and the study of European architecture, decorative arts, and textile design at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (1989). Pollack researches material technology and design history, and creates textile artwork reflecting a historical approach with contemporary solution. Her education philosophy matches RIT's in its integral approach to the education of fine art, design, and craft, embracing a Bauhaus tradition while maintaining the importance of handcraft in an industrial and post-industrial era. Pollack brings the strength of her training and experience as an artist to her role as educator. Her experience includes working with textile mills in Italy and France, as well as the U.S., on design commissions for home furnishings and hospitality market based on silk weaving and new heat transfer technology combined with digital printing.

Pollack is a sought after lecturer and workshops leader at numerous national and international conferences. The participation includes, among others, the World Craft Forum, Kanazawa, Japan 2003, Technology as Catalyst Symposium in Washington D. C., International Surface Design Conference, Kansas City, USA 2000, International Shibori Symposium in Nagoya, Japan 1993, Ahmedabad, India 1996, Santiago, Chile 1999, and International Makers Symposium, Toronto, Canada 1999.

Pollack’s work has been exhibited internationally in such museums as the Palais des Royale King Baudouin Art Space in Brussels, Belgium (2004); Kunstbanken Hedmark Kunstsenter in Hamar and Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum in Trondheim, Norway (2003); Taideteollisusmuseo Museum of Art and Design in Helsinki, Finland (2000); the Museum of Fine Arts in Santiago, Chile (1999); the Historical Textile Museum and Guimet Museum of Lyons, France (1992 and 1987); the Textile Museum in Terrassa, Spain (1992), and others.

Nationally she has exhibited at the American Craft Museum, New York (2000); the Textile Museum, Washington, D.C. (2002); Spencer Museum, Kansas City (2003); the Hunterdon Museum of Art, Clinton, NJ (1997); the Milwaukee Museum (1987), the Dawney Museum in Dawney, CA (1990), and others in the U.S.A.

Gallery exhibitions of Pollack’s work have been held in many cities such as Manza, Italy, Tokyo, Nagoya, Kanazawa, and Kyoto, Japan, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Seattle, Washington, D.C., Taos, Saint Louis, Kansas City, and other cities around the globe.

Pollack was invited in 2005 to exhibit at the 5th International Kaunas Art Biennial Textile 05 representing USA, and in 2003 to exhibit among the leading craft media artists from around the world – among the 4 in fiber from the US- in the international invitational exhibition entitled, “21 Artists Each from America, Europe and Asia”, curated and organized by the 21st Century Museum, Kanazawa, Japan. Also in 2002-3 the exhibition, “Technology as Catalyst: Textile Artist on the Cutting Edge” at the Textile Museum in Washington D.C. curated by Rebecca Stevens, with speaking engagement for the related symposium and discussion sessions scheduled around these exhibitions. In 2000 her work was included among the international invitational traveling exhibition, “Defining Craft, Collecting for the Millennium” curated by David McFadden, Chief Curator of Museum of Art and Design.

Pollack competed in and was chosen among the 2 artists representing the USA (with 26 finalists from Eastern and Western Europe, and the USA) in the 11th International Lace Biennial Contemporary Art Exhibition judged by the 12 international jurors in 2004. This exhibition will traveled from Brussels, Belgium to Hague, Germany in the year 2005. She was among the five finalists representing the USA (with 60 from the whole world) in 1994 International Textile Contest and Exhibition at the SPACE Gallery in Tokyo, Japan. The 30 finalists were chosen from 6 industrial countries, England, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the U.S.

Honors include nomination for the best 100 Visual Artists of the Year 2004, Influential Artist/Designer of the Year 2000, and Who’s who in the Art of the 21st Century nominated by the Biographical Society of Cambridge, England. She received an honor presented by the Queen Fabiola of Belgium.

Through these selective exhibition activities and honors Professor Pollack demonstrates a new standards in contemporary textile art and design practice that encourage new, innovative, and experimental approaches to this medium. By being selected among the top U.S. textile artists and designers, Pollack demonstrates in her professional activity what she professes as an educator.
