Georgia State University currently offers a variety of courses that specifically examine or include Greek culture, history, and influence. Students can explore these topics as part of the University’s Classical Studies degree concentration or through minor courses. Support of the Center for Hellenic Studies will enable the University to expand and develop Hellenic studies offerings through program concentrations, student scholarships, additional faculty positions and endowed professorships, guest lectures and visiting scholars, study abroad experiences, and the specific initiatives indicated below.
Language and Literature (Modern and Classical Languages, English): These courses provide a detailed exploration of the influence of the Greek language and the accomplishments of Hellenic writers.
Contributions to this area will expand library holdings, sponsor film screenings and theatre performances, and bring eminent speakers in Hellenic language and literature to Georgia State for lectures and seminars.
Philosophy and Rhetoric (Philosophy, English, Communication): These courses focus on the contributions of early philosophers and trace their influence on the development of Western philosophical ideas and discursive practices.
Support will enable Georgia State to sponsor academic conferences and seminars in philosophy and rhetoric and will provide for the acquisition of additional print and electronic resources in the area.
Art, Architecture, and Historic Preservation (Art and Design, History): Courses provide an in-depth study of the art and architecture of Greece and its influence on Western civilization. Classes also focus on the conservation of historic buildings.
Contributions will make possible gallery exhibitions focusing on Hellenic art and architecture and will enable the expansion of print and electronic visual resources. Support will also provide for heritage preservation case studies throughout Greece.
History, Culture, and Politics (History, Anthropology and Geography, Political Science): Offerings focus on ancient and contemporary Greek civilization, western political systems, and cultural development in Greece.
Support will provide opportunities for students to journey to Greece for field experiences and will facilitate on-site research on Hellenic history, culture, and politics. Contributions will also enable the University to sponsor public events relating to this emphasis.
