Community Outreach
In the decade from 1990-2000, the number individuals
of Asian descent in Georgia increased by 128%, to a total of 173,170
(Census 1990,2000).
Most of this growth occurred in metropolitan Atlanta, which currently
is home to an Asian population of 152,702, an increase of 200% over
the previous decade.
Asian community networks in this area include organizations of Asian
Americans, ethnic chambers of commerce, consulates and cultural centers,
and professional networks, media and religious congregations affiliated
with Asian related groups.
According to the Office of International Affairs, Georgia State University’s
population of students identifying as Asian numbers almost 2,400 (of
which 49% are international students), including 650 graduate students
(11% of the graduate student total).
The Asian Studies Center at GSU seeks to actively integrate student,
faculty, and the larger community to address opportunities and challenges
presented by the emerging Asian presence in the local and global community.
