What is Six Sigma?

"It is the only program I've ever seen where customers win, employees are engaged in and satisfied by, and shareholders are rewarded. Everybody who touches it wins."

 - Jack Welch, former Chairman, GE

A genuine focus on the customer, backed by an attitude that puts the customer needs first, as well as by systems and strategies that serve to tie in the manufacturing to the Voice of the Customer. All metrics are defined based in the - Voice of the Customer.

Data - and fact - driven management, with effective measurement systems that track both results and outcomes and Process, Input, and other predictive factors.

Process focus, management and improvement, as an engine for growth and success.  Processes in Six Sigma are documented, communicated, measured and refined on an ongoing basis. Primary activities include designing data marts and ongoing statistical analyses. Continuous Improvement strategies are supported through process monitoring and decision support.

Proactive management, involving habits and practices that anticipate problems and changes, apply facts and data, and questions assumptions about goals and how we do things; relies on quality at the source, where everyone is responsible for their own quality, as opposed to the use of independent inspection.

In summary, Six Sigma is a comprehensive management philosophy that utilizes fact based information (through statistical methods, decision support techniques and business intelligence technologies) to produce breakthrough results in corporate performance.

  • can be applied throughout a company - on the production line, in transactions, in deliveries, in human resources - using hard data - dimensions, delivery times,     numbers of errors -  not vague theories.
  • focuses on the reduction of defects to 3.4 per million opportunities; reducing the  variation in processes so that work is done right the first time, eliminating costly rework, waste, and customer dissatisfaction.
  • is a structured DMAIC methodology (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control) with "tollgates" to assure strategic alignment, continuity of support, and a standardized process to manage improvement projects to assure success.

How is GSU's Lean Six Sigma certification superior?

Quality: This curriculum is based in the academic rigor of several graduate level courses  making it the only comprehensive offering anywhere. Our executive education framework blends the best of university level standards with professional competency and training.

Integration beyond Six Sigma: Our curriculum integrates six sigma and lean, with business analytics, business intelligence, and decision support under one umbrella. Such an integrated approach will enable our Black Belts to create an appropriate infrastructure to implement six sigma projects using sophisticated analytics and information technology tools.
